Chris it was a one-off custom jobbie, I'm not that keen to do this sort of thing a lot, the wire-up job after all boards were built and tested was about 90 minutes and when football season is over that's tedious.

No, that never happens.

I socket them because 2n5088s are variable. They are not all created equal in my experience

Looks nifty, but Gain isn't the whole story as far as I know - I have some npns that just sound plain bad in terms of frequecny response.

Are sockets also useful for peace of mind when soldering? I always worry about the heat from the iron frying them, so decided I might try sockets out next time to be on the safe side.

Yeah they're useful for prototyping in that you can swap different transistors or the same transistors with varying gains and leakage to see what's works best.

As for the heat thing, it's possibly counter-intuitive, but if your soldering iron is hot enough and the solder flows freely then the chances of overheating transistors is very small. However, if you've a useless soldering iron and you're hanging around for ages trying to get the solder to melt you've more chance of burning stuff. To put things in perspective, I've never burnt a single transistor in however long I've been doing this, and I was crap at soldering when I started!

I recommend them for people building their own because if you fuck up a pinout orientation that's not going to be pleasant to fix.
