DGNR8's Late Seventies Strat

Thanks again everyone.

It's funny but the one thing I was happiest about is something that probably wouldn't have even been noticed.
There was a little streak of epoxy left from the old repair right at the corner of the new bridge pickup plug.
A small chunk that had splintered off at some time and the dark epoxy had seeped into the crack.

For some reason it bugged the crap out of me but I didn't know how to fix it.
I knew I didn't want to just grind it out and use some wood filler.
So I decided to take out a small v shaped channel with a razor and glue in the edge from a scrape piece of ash.
Once the glue had dried I sanded it down flush and suprisingly it was almost invisible.

It's nice when I don't screw up.

I'm thinking this might be a way to blend the rounded corners of a plugged repair. I'm going to give it a try in the future.

It's my ten year wedding anniversary (hence the big trip) but I am painting this thing today. I had to sand a bit at the top body contour to get that transition right. We all know it by feel. I asked Cooter to leave it for me, so I wouldn't be a total LOAD. The new wood is like granite. I am out there in my 90 degree garage dripping water from my forehead. But loving it. I will take progress pics.

I tried to use lacquer thinner to get the rest of the paint off the bottom, but it didn't budge. Then I remembered reading that acetone is the right solvent (per the beauty parlor) and I was able to do a bit better, but it saturated the paper towels with paint. I also tried pouring acetone on it and while it was wet, using the side of a chisel, which takes it off like a spatula with cheese. But I got little bits of dried paint stuck around the black stripe edge, so I sanded it slightly. It would be a shame to remove base, primer, and black, only to put it all back on. I also like the idea of rough edges, which most old guitars have anyway.

I am going to try to shoot THREE bursts this weekend: the Strat, a Jazzy, and a special mystery model.

I found that for filling wee bits like that you can just use some epoxy/or wood glue mixed with the sawdust of the wood it's self. Did this when my drill went wonky and took a small chunk out of a fingerboard when I was drilling dots. Might not be so good depending what type of finish you're using?

PROGRESS pics!

I painted this as a sunburst 3 times before giving up. I just couldn't get it right. After 4 more times on a later Telecaster, I think I could probably do it now.

I also started the ANTIGUA this weekend. I have several curing now so I can double back and work on older projects.

I can imagine how challenging painting a burst can be... did you refin the bursts or just paint a solid over them? BTW, the tele looks great and I like the color you chose for the strat body.
