Death By Audio Fuzz War

I have recently been interested in getting a fuzz to use in a live setting (right now I am making due with stacking overdrives together) because I am tired of having very many pedals.

I have always been interested in a IC Muff (which I would gladly order from someone on here who makes pedals...) but now I am also very interested in the Death By Audio Fuzz War. I have no idea how close it is schematically to a IC Muff or what schematics the fuzz war pedal is even based off of.

This is one of the only demoes I can find that seem to be using single-coils:

I am asking you fine folk if you have any experience with Death By Audio, and if one of their pedals is worth the 150 bucks it costs, or if it is better for me to just maybe pucker up, spend some more and get one of the more traditional Dwarfcraft pedals or a custom made similar fuzz from another maker on this board.

I really like the like of the DBA stuff although I could never pay those prices. If I could afford I'd get the supersonic fuzz gun

FWIW I've had three dwarfcraft pedals (SA, shiva and Internet. I had to trade the SA still have other two) and all I can say is that they are fucking MEGA! I'd never get rid. Unique, crazy, quality but most importantly fucking FUN!

Who's to say what anything is worth. The price of parts in any of these pedals is less than $20, but if what it does for you is worth $150, go for it.

I have a clone of the DBA Supersonic Fuzzgun I got a friend to make me. It's good for what it is, which is mostly unusable fuzzy noise with some controls that can make a nice unpredictable synthy tone. I wouldn't pay those prices for it though as I only use it every now and again. The whole point with them is that they go a bit splatty and daft every now and again so they're not totally reliable. If that's what you want then that's fine.

I also have a Zvex Woolly Mammoth (made by my friend again) which is a different beast, but fairly versatile and reliable. Again.. not worth the $250 pricetag or whatever. But still very good.

It is all about trying it. Sometimes I just feel like their are certain pedals that exist on 'fleecing' you based off of namesake and brand. But I guess that is the exact same thing. IF that name is worth it go for it.

It's hand-crafted. How long does it take to solder and craft it? If you want to work cost-covering, you should take 50-100$ per hour...

Effect pedals retain their value fairly well and are easy to sell. If you end up not liking something for whatever reason, you can generally count on taking a $50 hit on it, which sounds pretty harsh but it's the cost of experimentation and it's better than having $150 tied into a pedal that you can't use or don't really like.

I guess what I'm saying is go for it and if it sucks, flip it and use the money to have Mike or Tim build you an IC fuzz.

Can't say that isn't a worry. However I always use lead-free solder and work in a ventilated area. Working with leaded solder back in the day did have noticable effects on my nerves and caused headaches, so I switched pretty quick. I may invest in some sort of extractor fan in the near future, but I'm also getting to the stage when some of my populating work is outsourced. Assembly work isn't as time-consuming.
