Yeah - I ended up with 2 Strats (one for a friend) and found a CIJ Jag in Osaka as well. Bought a screwdriver in a dollar store and took the necks off, the bodies fit easily (but heavily!) in my suitcase and I wrapped the necks in a bundle with bubble wrap between them. Apart from the weight it couldn't have been easier. It meant I had to pass up the hard case that came with the Greco, but whatever. I was travelling with my family so we got a small suitcase for one of my daughters and put one body in for the return flight to keep my suitcase under 30kg. I wouldn't say it was the most domestically popular purchasing decision but it was pretty easy otherwise.
With the Jag, I bought it from Miki Gakki and they had the presence of mind to fill out a tax-exemption notice - I just had to produce my passport, we wrote down some details and I got a slip of paper I had to hand to Customs at departure. 5% reduction in the price due to eliminating consumption tax. The total of the 3 guitars was over the $900 limit but families can pool their allowance for re-entering Australia, so no issues at all in Immigration.
