New pedal woes: Holy Grail

Hey all, I picked this up in the local pawn shop. Pretty sure I got a bargain (£10!!) only problem is I can't get it to produce a sound. To be honest I'm not quite sure which output I plug my guitar into, let alone what that gold shit is around pot. I'm also worried that there is an electrical hazard here as the pedal shows a faint glow even with no battery installed. Can you take a look at the pic below and let me know if you see anything obviously wrong? Thanks
