NGD: 1978 Bronco!

Post by Jaded »

So after recently selling my Vibrolux Custom (and getting an old JC-50 as part of the deal!) I had some money burning a hole in my pocket. This popped up on eBay and I managed to snag it at a really nice price. Excuse the poor photos, taken in a rush to get back to playing it

It's in pretty good condition with a few dings here and there and some strange wear on the top (you can kind of see it in the 3rd picture). The trem is fantastic, right out of the box I stuck the neck on and put a set of 10.5's on and it works perfectly. It has the range of a Jag/JM and with the kind of "immediacy" of a Strat. Didn't come with an arm but I had a Staytrem Mustang arm laying about which works perfectly.

It sounds amazing too, with the tone up full it's one of the most jangly guitars I've played without getting into icepick territory. Once you get the tone down around 6-7 it rounds out nicely and works great for most things.

It's definitely a keeper. Just needs a little more set-up work to get rid of some string buzz here and there, probably just needs a little truss rod tweak as the previous owner was using 12s or something.

Bronco Trems are awesome and very underrated.

The market for Broncos is usually in the $600-$800, though some people want crazy money for them. The price seems to slowly be headed upward.

I love your guitar. I really want a vintage white/cream Bronco to go along my Red Bronco.

The few I've seen on eBay UK seem to be around £600 and up. Though yeah, you get the odd one with a stupid price. Seem's like it wouldn't be much more expensive importing one.

After playing this one for a few days I've been finding myself thinking I need to sell a Jaguar or two and get a red one to go along with this too... It's surprising me how little I miss the neck pickup

...and +1 on the trem, it's probably just the honeymoon period and all but I'd say I like it just as much as the Jag/JM if not more. This thing does not go out of tune.

Damn right. Gary Busey is definietly my favourite Bronco player. I think that Buddy Holly movie may have been the first time I'd seen a Bronco.

I guess it would be the same as a Mustang bridge pickup from the era. Unless they wound them differently for Broncos?

Love that colour combo, that's the look I was going for with my Jag.

Nice Score, please consider this fellow Londoner if you ever decide to sell ;)

I see them average between $600-1200 on ebay depending on condition, but have seem them sell for $1700 and up in pristine condition with original case and goodies. I paid $450 for my late 79 sans paint. The pre-CBS are far nicer than the CBS offerings, but I'd still take a CBS era Bronco.

Congrats Jaded. 8)

I don't think the prices have caught up yet, but Broncos seem to be out of circulation ATM.

JMO.....I think Broncos are becoming somewhat rare since alot of them were just thrown in the garbage by unsuspecting Moms.... or parted out. In good original condition, I believe they will be collector material not too far down the road.
