MIJ Jaguar '66 Reissue 'Block and Bound' question
Hi there,
first post so go easy on me please!
I've got the opportunity to get me a '66 Reissue block and bound Jaguar. I've lusted after one for as long as i can remember and now an opportunity has arisen.
The thing is, it's MIJ (not CIJ) and the serial number is T+ six digits. Now, as i understand it, it could be a '94-'95 or it could be a post 2008 as Fender Japan has now resorted to using the old system.
Can anyone point me to a resource that can tell me when the block and bound '66 reissues were made (or if they still are). If not, how can i date my Jag? Different fonts or hardwear? Any help gratefully appreciated.

Due to work commitments, i'll not be able to get to see it again until the weekend so i can't take pictures but i'll see if my bud can send some over in the mean time.
The binding looks to be aged and yellowing which would lead me to think it's a 90's model but it is almost spotless with no dinks, dings or scrapes. Sunburst finish, tortie scratchplate; even the finish on the neck and headstock look quite aged and not a pale maple.

Not facetious at all bud, I do intend to buy but hell, if i'm going to drop my wad on a guitar, i'd like to know what i'm buying! I'm a member of other forums and time and again I've read posts by people 'Tell me what guitar I've got?'. Yes, I know it's a '66 reissue Jag but when there is possibly 13 years variation in age, i'm sure you'd agree that it's best to have all the facts before handing over your hard earned. The specs may be different, the body materials could be as well. Besides, if i can identify a resource that can give me some info, i may be able to negotiate a better deal. Hope that comes across ok.gusman2x wrote:Is there any reason that it would matter? I don;t mean to sound facetious, but if it plays and sounds good, and is in good nick, snap it up!
'66 Classic Jaguar was a 2009 run, if I'm not mistaken. I don't think other Japanese Jags had B&B before that one.
I own one and I love it. Have been considering a pickup upgrade to AVRI pickups, but haven't yet.

This thread/spreadsheet I was compiling could help - http://shortscale.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=44551
Also, the yellowed blocks are consistent with my '66 Classic, likely not a sign of actual age.

Well, i went over this weekend and pulled the trigger! I had the control plates off and had a look at the pots but they just seem to have the pot values printed on them, no dates at all so no way of dating it there. The finger board is as dry, the frets are a little dirty and the strings are old and probably 0.09's so i'll probably strip them off and take the neck off to see if there is any printing on the neck or pocket that will give me a date.
The binding on the side of the neck seems to be covered with poly so only the top is white/cream, is this normal? The side markers are in the neck and not the binding, again, par for the course?
Anyway, there appears to be little if any evidence of use on the rest of the guitar, some scratches on the pickguard but the 'burst body is free of any marks which would again lead me to surmise this is a later example. All in all i'm very happy.
I still do not know if this is a limited run or not or producion numbers, maybe a JDM only example.

While it ultimately doesn't matter it's completely understandably to want to know the age, I know I would want to. Though in terms of quality after a certain point, maybe around 94/95, MIJ/CIJ Fenders have felt remarkably consistent. Whether
It's definitely worth posting a few photos. There could easily be a detail or two that gives away the age that somebody notices but you wouldn't have thought to mention. The neck dots/binding thing would be easier with photos, too.
At a guess I would say that a lack of pot codes makes it more likely to be more recent.

Shabba.
Not really sure as this will count as guitar porn, you caught me giving the old girl (young girl?) a spa treatment while i await the Staytrem!
This is my desk at work (it's a bit quiet and my office is tucked away)
This is the heel of the neck with the MIJ, serial number and some factory printing...
These are the marker dots. You can see they are in the neck rather than the binding.
Face up.......
.......face down!
and the trem unit which i'm going to do a little finishing on the inner surfaces. When she's finished, she'll go in here:
Hope thats ok with you guys, not really porn though.

that now clears it up; afaik the font above the serial is a rather bulletproof way to date those MIJ-guitars. The font in which "Made in Japan" is printed on your neck clearly is hooked to the newer ones.

My 1993 MIJ Jazzmaster also has the taller, thinner letters. and yours is so clean. it does not look 20 years old.

So is it this?
2007 was another transitional year for Japanese-made Fender instruments, with the return to the “Made in Japan country-of-origin identifier on the serial number decal. This was a running change, and both “Made in Japan and “Crafted in Japan decals appear on instruments from 2007 and 2008.
