I saw some of TTNG's set at ArcTanGent this summer. I wasn't enthralled, but I did catch Chinchilla, which is the one song of theirs I actually like, so I was pretty content.

The VI thing is really cool looking either way, I've never seen another one like it so I assume it must be a custom build.
My friend Cai is a pretty big fan. From what he was saying I think they used to be a 4-piece with two guitars, bass and drums, then when they shrunk to a 3-piece this guy moved from guitar onto the VI in order to bridge the gap. Or something. I don't know. I really like that song Chinchilla though.

Definitely a self-modified Squier Jag bass from the look of it, you can see where he filled in the stock tuner holes and removed the 4-string bridge... the two highest strings are sharing a tree slot.
MatthewK was aiming at doing the same thing to a jazz bass awhile back
