got the skanky les Paul gold top back out the box. it's actually a really nice player warts and all. I'm gonna umm and ahh about it today, maybe change the strings and see what I think. It would certainly be easier to keep it, and for a £200 guitar I can tolerate a scratch or two if it cleans up okay. It's due for collection tomorrow though

tried out a lot of the lower end gretsch models and they all sound bad. the problem is how imbalanced the eq is across strings. lovely chimey bright treble strings and muddy bass strings, no matter how new the strings are. i was willing them to be good but it didn't work. i did like the bigsbys however.
i then looked for p90 guitars. the ONLY one they had in stock was a jim adkins telecaster. it sounded amazing and reinforced that i really want a p90 equipped guitar.
so i think i'm going to go back to basics and do things on the cheap. i'm after one of these
Alan Sparhawk from Low plays one of them live.
Maybe he does, but that's apparently not what he's playing in the video you posted, because the one in the video is a carved top. The one in the pic is a flat top.
very keen eye. judging by the black hardware i'd say it's a gothic les paul
the one i've posted is bottom tier, basswood body, bolt on neck les paul ii. a couple of my friends have had them and they're really fun and sound great in a plinky kind of way
That lawsuit thing is.bandied about all the time, but the actaul lawsuit was atiny thing that was only brought against one manufacturer, and much layer than this. Much as I love MIJ guitars, they made some fucking DRECK ones, especially before the late.seventies.
think i might keep this vintage gold top. i put some elixir strings on, vaseline and graphite on the nut and gave a nice turn of the truss rod and action adjustment, and it's a really nice player. the scratches are cosmetic, and i can overlook the screw missing. plus i can now just buy a gfs trem and its job done/
the p90s sound really nice but a bit too dark. with the janglebox it sounds great so i think in the long run it may benefit from 1 meg pots. has the exact tone i'm after though.
one down side is i'm having trouble adjusting the neck pickup down, and the bridge pickup up. the screw strips on the neck, and the bridge pickup won't rise up and is actually stuck, so that may require extra investigation to sort out the volume imbalance
Did you get money off the price of the guitar? If not complain like fuck until you do. My Blacktop Tele had a small crack in the finish and I go £50 off.
Similarly, my flatmate bought some kind of £3000 PRS monstrosity for £1600 because it had a crack in the finish and one of the tuners was a slightly different colour. Still stupidly expensive, but much less stupidly expensive,
them vintage p90goldtops are real nice. my mate had one, i only played it a few times but it was well worth the 200squid he paid for it. i think he sold it to buy a bass cos he plays bass in Counting Coins now.
