Stewart is right, if a string breaks the spring will decompress a little which means upward movement. If the lock is on it cant do this.
It takes some tinkering to set it up spot on but it does work.

maybe yours were modded but i'm pretty sure they all work in this way (that i've played), where sliding the lock into place stops upward travel only.
if you detune your low E string til its absolutely loose, both with the trem lock on and off you'll the difference. it's slight i guess.
edit: the string detuning test may only work on a properly set up trem
there's no downward movement at all, honest. it has a mute on it, so the setup is probably not like the average Jag. Hurb did it, perhaps he can remember the details...
So, I Really need to change at least the bridge pickup. Took my strat along with my jag. Jag was quite harsh compared to the rounder tone of the strat. The jags got quite a nasal sound that's present on all amp settings.
So thinking of a pickup that's more mellow, rounder.

Might try the pots. 1meg pots with single coil pickups aren't always everyone's cup of tea. I like really bright sounds, so I dig it but I know others who have dropped them down to 500k or 250k. Could simulate it somewhat by turning the tone down a bit to see if it makes it less shrill in your perception.
yeah i would say a hotter, or at least different pickups (i dont like the SD designed i had in my mustang) and lower pots. even with lowering the tone it's not really the same to have dial in and out all the time, and it lowers volume. even 500k would be a nice change, i have them in my brat but mainly to counteract the darkness of a TOM. so yeah, also a TOM bridge will add a lot more oomph and bass over the stock plinky jag style bridge.
