So tomorrow night I'm gigging.......

Talk about all other types of guitars. Jazzmasters and basses go here!

So tomorrow night I'm gigging.......

Post by Progrockabuse »

An original Gibson les Paul, not sure on model or year but apparently it's a family heirloom of one of my dads friends. Been sat in a case since the late 60's. Who know what it might be, but very scared/excited.

My dad's mate said he wants to see someone play it that would do it justice. Very humbling and means a lot.

I won't get to see it till the gig, should I restring it in the break between sets? Guessing its gonna be a bit crusty in that case.

I would have such anxiety over this....not for fear of playing someone else's guitar or doing it enough justice, but not being able to restoring it until minutes before the gig.....strings need a bit to stretch properly and the neck could even be warped or cracked, electronics could have a short. ..

I would ask if he could have it set up/restrung at a reputable shop in advance before the show. Good luck in any case.

The owner isn't a player, it came into the family via his dad. His dad was a plumber/player and got paid for a job with it.

Wonder if it could be a 58/59 burst?

I'm hoping for a goldtop!

I wouldn't ask him to get it set up, but I would see if you can get hold of it a little before hand to check it out/restring. Even half an hour.

yeah

i get the whole magical unveiling, but realistically it would be a huge anticlimax if you got it out the case and it was in a shit state and couldn't be gigged. ask if you can get it gig ready, or maybe find someone else you'd trust to do it beforehand. otherwise i kind of think they're putting you on the spot, and you're just being too nice

It'll be one of those moments where might end up falling in love with something I'll never be able to afford/owe

Or it'll be shit and and I'll smash it lol

If it's playing badly just whack it in an open tuning, grab a slide and do an Free Bird. That should eat up the first half of the set and then you can tech it a bit.

Think I'll be usimg my tele most of the night and bust this out for couple of songs. I've got my fast fret and tools so can do a little tweaking, slide might be the way to go.

Last night was a fail, guy didn't come in the end. Still was an epic gig and I got to play my jag instead.

How did you enjoy playing the jag live? Did you swap out the bridge pickup in the end?

Left it stock for now. It's wasn't too bad, worked for the indie stuff quite nice. Had it on for disco 2000
