Tele pickup shopping.

bout to totally modd this cv Tele I esquired a while ago. back to stock. turns out I miss that neck pickup.

so I want to make this brittle sounding Tele to sound TWANGY and FAT and like not shitty. idk.
and since the squier cv tele is an amazing budget guitar im gonna do it on the cheap.

thinking about these 52 Tele professional pickups that gfs has here: TONEZ

one choice for neck pickup, but a bit undecided on the bridge. regular Tele pickup or overwound. what's the difference?
just felt the guitar never had that "Tele sound" and I wanna try and get close to that or achieve that.

or should I try something else?

wanted to ask about the jazzy pups but that's another challenge for another day, prolly will go avri there.

I'm absolutely head over heels for the Lollar Vintage T set that is in Mrs. LC's guitar that she doesn't ever play. I used to hang with a guy that had a dealer account with Lollar though, so I got them for wholesale and that's way cheaper than retail. 220 American Dollars is pretty high for a set of guitar pickups.

Loads of people hand-wind pickups these days for very reasonable prices. I'd go for that option before GFS.

A buddy has a set of Rio Grande Vintage Tall Boys in his early '70s Tele and they sound pretty stout..... really stout in fact.

I like the Seymour Duncan APTR-1 in the neck position cause it has the Alnico 2 magnet. Either that or the Quarter Pounder for Tele if you want some heat.

alnico 2 is too middy for a neck pickup in my experience.

i'd look at the gfs fatbody range if you want more poke in the bridge and a glassier neck tone. 10k output in the bridge which is about as hot as you'd want to get while still sounding twangy. and the neck is 7k with an open design so will sound more like a strat. best of everything in my opinion. if you still want more twang, change the pots to 500k

this is quite a bad rockabilly noodly demo, but it demonstrates the overall idea. the set sounds nice and well balanced.

i also agree about the stock cv tele pickups. if you have the alnico 5 set they sound thin and shit

also, if you want more twang and sustain ditch those brass saddles if it has them installed.

Have to say the GFS Fatboy is an impressive pickup, it isn't brittle and it keeps some twang.

When I was building a '60s Tele project I got an AV '64 Custom Tele bridge pickup, and you're currently witnessing me in the process of living happily ever after.

I had previously tried the GFS '52 (I still have it in a Tele Custom copy I built from GFS bits) and didn't like it, too bright and clean but without teh TWANGZORS. I never tried their hot '60s pickup but given the burn with the '50s one I'd just go with the Fatbody if I ever tried another GFS Tele unit.
