N(D)GD (how to fix the damage?)

Ok guitar fixer upers the refund is in the bank, time to fix the damage, I bought some mahogany stain to colour match the back, will a few layers of clear nail polish do to build up the chip - I've done this with smaller chips or should I be using something else due to the size of the gash?

Be careful with nailpolish. Some of it is nitro based and would cause existing finish to melt if it is also nitro.

Stain the wood then build it up with thick varnish?
