Project Idea - is this feasible?

Painting? Routing? Set-up tips? Or just straight-up making a guitar from scratch? Post here, and post pics!

Project Idea - is this feasible?

Post by Freddy V-C »

As some of you know, I recently bought a Vintage VS6. I love how it looks and how it plays, but I'm not arsed about the sound. Having sold my Jagmaster for the same reason I'm starting to think that maybe I just don't like humbuckers. My favourite pickups I've had in any guitar I've owned are the stock pickups in my VM Jaguar. BobAC has very kindly offered me the pickups from his VM Jag, and Noirie has offered me some Jaguar covers.

So what I'm thinking is...

?????

PROFIT

Is there any reason that this wouldn't work?

the routs will need to be bigger to accommodate jaguar pickup claws and covers.

however, what you could do is just put regular strat pickup covers on them, and it should be right as rain

I've got some unused Strat pickups lying around actually... so I could just use the covers from those and then in theory this would work?

I think so freddy - at worst a wee bit of sanding and such jiggery-pokery. Just do it!

Awesome idea! Should have done something similar before I sold my Jagmaster. I'm like you and have realised recently that I'm just not that into buckers, especially not in Fender guitars.

Cool idea, if it doesn't work you could always stick a set of dream/mean 90s in there dots (I think) put them in a hh jag

Come to think of it didn't robroe do singlecoils in a sg a while back.

My previous experiences with P90s have been underwhelming, but I might consider something like a Mean90/Dream90 combo if this doesn't work out.

How about using a batwing style pickguard?
Like this;

But cut to suit whatever pickups you want.

I've considered it, but that would mean buying a new pickguard and drilling more holes!

Me too. Not much of a P90 fan, but Dream 90s were amazing; had them in my old SG - like having a good tele bridge pickup in both positions. Was ace.

Shad, your SGuar is partly what inspired this, to be honest.

It might be of relevance to your internets to know I got single-coily voiced buckers in the SGuar - Humbucker from Hell in the neck (which sounds like a piezo split) and Bluesbucker (p90-alike tones). Maybe that would be more your speed in future guitars?

Those might be worth looking into, definitely. I think I'm gonna stick with the VM Jag pickups for this, mainly because it's gonna look super weird and I like super weird SGs.

The dude from Humanfly's super weird SG was another source of inspiration.

This is a combination I've really grown fond of, although I was coming at it from the opposite side--forcing myself to branch out and not play HH guitars exclusively. A Dream 90 in the neck position gives me my favorite clean tone in the world, big and fat and chimey. But I'm all for weirding up a guitar if you know the look and the sound you're after.
