This. I took the neck pickup out of my SG and have never looked back.

I only use the bridge pickup in my tele and it sounds great for everything I do. No reason why you couldn't make an Esquire work for you. I do have a hotter, fatter pickup in mine though - a Dimarzio Pre B1.
