NOGD - Squier Standard Telecaster

Post by TheBurbz »

Nogged!

I've been looking for a Squier Standard Tele in CAR for a while, seems they were discontinued at some point. Anyway, I found one in stock and ordered it from a website, it arrived in perfect condition with the cellophane wrap still on the pickguard and tuners, stickers still on etc. The funny thing was I noticed the bridge saddles were not the same as the pictures I'd been drooling over, and after taking the guitar apart found that this has actually been hanging up somewhere for 14 years.

I posted this tale on another forum and they say I should receive a sizeable discount, return it or ask for freebies. My girlfriend agrees. I personally think it's a cool thing to have happened, I still consider the guitar new since it's clearly unused. At first I thought I was wrongly deciphering the serial number on the headstock, but I stripped the guitar down and both the neck heel and body are stamped 10th May 2000. I also found that the pickguard is bright white underneath the heel overhang, but sunburnt cream everywhere else. I didn't actually notice the pickguard wasn't white until I saw the contrast between the two areas.

So as I said, it's pretty weird but a bit of a cool story bro. There's certainly nothing wrong with it quality wise, and apart from the bridge saddles being the barrel-type rather than the block-type there don't seem to be any other differences between this guitar and the current Standard series Teles.

I don't see that it matters really, after all it is still new - I like the pickguard discolouring personally.

Oh no. Probably staying standard but I quite like the look of B/W/B like the Blacktop Tele:

I like these. My girlfriend's brother has a black sparkle one that I play from time to time. Much better than the affinity Tele I had.

Needs amp knobs and a 4 way switch. That's the perfect Tele.

Was the other forum you posted this on a vintage comics site? They don't take too kindly to cyber-villians from the year 2,000.

I had a 2004 Standard in sunburst that was identical to that one save for the strat-style saddles, it was also an Indonesian one. It was a great Telecaster, less unnecessary body routing than most low-end/vintage/reissue ones (could rock it guard-less), and I preferred it's neck profile and stock pickups to what the MIM Standard Teles had.

It was Squier-talk. Bit of a mistake in hindsight, it's like Offset for snobbery. The routing was one of the things I noticed about the guitar when I took the pickguard off - it just has a very tidy rout for the neck pickup, not the diagonal part that some Telecasters have.

Lovely colour - I have the same tele in cream from 2001 - I've just fitted a cv50 bridge pup from thom in mine and it sounds great.
The routing under the neck pup will take a humbucker too.
Deffo thicker and heavier body than the affinity tele I used to have.
My saddles are different than yours although I'm not sure if mine are original.

Thanks. Mine doesn't have humbucker routing in the neck though, it's just the same as this:

I have new saddles for mine now, Strat-style ones like the newer models have. I prefer those ones.
