Hot Chilicone Fuzz FINISHED

Post by HNB »

I ordered a Hot Chilicon Fuzz pedal today. I really liked the Tonebender (and Fuzz Face for that matter) I had, but the control options were too limiting to me. Certain guitars sounded good with them and others I didn't like. I also didn't like that I couldn't use a wall adapter and had to unscrew them to swap batteries. I think I will like this pedal. It has a tone knob added and a fat switch. It also can do battery or wall power. I will get working on a decal for it once the thing arrives so I can get a better idea where the predrilled holes are and such. Got I hope this goes better than when I did the Shredmeister pedal and cocked it up. At least this time I have a multimeter to check resistors and caps... LOL

They emailed me the instructions, so thumbs up for the quick email. It is actually really helpful even though it is wasteful. Each resistor value has its own bag with the value labeled. This should help keep me from screwing up like I did on the Shredmeister. I had trouble identifying the capacitor values by the labels on them and put some in the wrong spot because of it. With them in baggies like this, it should be a breeze. (I didn't have a multimeter when I did the Shredmeister or I would have checked that way.)

Came up with a decal idea I liked. Zeppelin themed.

I will print it on transparent waterslide so the red will show where white would be. ;)

Resistor values can get confusing - the banding got me tied up in knots the last time I did a project like this. Unless you're colour blind (in which case you're in serious trouble!) this page may help.

Modified it a bit, printed, and applied. I will start putting clear over it this evening.

Some clear is making it look much nicer. I also cut out the holes of course.

I finally got around to working on this.

ImageIMG_6930 by Hentai No Baka, on Flickr

Got the resistors in.

Got the caps and socket-ed the rest.

Then I got to putting wires in and such. Sorry for the gap in progress there. I got in to the project and stopped taking pictures. LOL

All wired up.

So opinion.

I LOVE it. It is EXACTLY what I was hoping for. I loved my Tonebender I used to have, but hated that it kind of just did one sound with a volume knob. The tone control on this is super useful. You can get thick bassy fuzz or more trebly fuzz. The gain knob actually is very responsive. (I labeled it attack like a Tonebender.) The fat switch is really good too. It thickens the tone. The fuzz is pretty transparent with the treble up more. If you back the gain off, it is pretty quiet also. I kind of like the noise with it at full power. If you like fuzz, I would highly recommend it. It is super awesome.

An demo. (Yeah I know the audio quality sucks as much as my playing, but you can get an idea of different noise this makes. ;))
