Ibanez 7 Series

Post by johnnyseven »

Are these sleeper pedals?

I had the PM7 Phase Modulator once and it was capable of some nice phase tones and some crazy ring mod type tones. I snapped up a CF7 Chorus Flanger last night, mainly because it has a switch labelled 'Krazy' with a mode called 'Wacked' - and it sounded a bit like a VB2 when in Wacked Flanger mode.

The bass player in my band has the Phat Hed which, although the sound he uses sounds awful, has some good tones.

I'd be interested to hear other's opinions of any others in the range, or more info as to what the full range is.

I have the AW7 Auto Wah which is pretty decent, honestly. It has a switch to change it from a wah to a low pass filter, and the switch for the distortion gives you the option of placing it before or after the wah, which is a nice touch. If only it had an expression pedal jack, I wish I could control the low pass filter manually with my foot.

I also have a friend who has the FZ7 Fuzz and he tells me that it's gnarly, especially with the "damage" switch flipped on. And as everyone knows, the DE7 is killer, which sucks because it's so hard to find one for sale at a reasonable price. It just sounds too damn good.

I was thinking of picking up and FZ7, but do you know if it has the age old Muff issue of getting lost in the mix?

I don't think so, especially since the damage switch seems to add a lot of midrange. It sounds much more like a Superfuzz than a Big Muff.

That was the exact demo that made me interested in buying one.

Anyone know if these are analog or digital pedals, particularly the modulation - not that it matters, i'm just interested.

Re: Tonelok / 7-series

Well the DE7 isn't a sleeper. Some of the others might be sleepers; they can certainly be had very affordably second-hand.

I think the tubescreamer and Smash box distortion from that series are both decent.

Yeah, the Fuzz has thing going on when in the damage mode.

I've been intrigued by the LoFi pedal.

The PM7 Phase Modulator looks interesting.

@ johnnyseven - I think the only analogue modulation from that series is the 'AP7' (Analog Phaser); pretty sure all the others are digital.

Forgive my ignorance but what is a sleeper? I have the DE7 delay, which I rarely use but really like.

I understand it to means a pedal that is either under-rated, not much known about, or doesn't much attention and certainly doesn't get any hype, but is actually rather good.

I would include being able to pick them up cheaply.
