because the windings are fragile and the cover protects them

There's a common tele mod of fitting a coverless strat pickup through the tele neck pickup sized hole in the pickguard. It works, but HELLA DUDES end up breaking a winding and rendering the pickup useless. If you're gonna go for nude pickups, you need to wrap some tape around the winding before installing.
