At around $500-600 US, the SEs are hardly expensive brand new. Used, the older SEs can be had for half that. BUT they are expensive when you consider that used S2s, which are USA made, but slotted in between the SEs and the standard models, go for < $1000 used.
The bird inlays on the SEs are cheap plastic though. I wish they would've stuck with the moon inlays. Hardware is nothing special, either.
