Changing PUPS on a Fender Pawn shop 51? (mounting ring)

Post by HellaMelos »

I'm interested in changing out the pickups on my Fender Pawn shop 51 stat, but the humbucker mounting ring is one of the pesky Fender ones that only fits Fender brand pickups. (3 hole rather than 2)

Does anyone know what kind of mounting ring would fit on my strat? I don't want to drill a hole in the middle of the ring I currently have.

Also, does anyone have any suggestions for a nice single coil neck pickup would sound good with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge?

thanks,

Could you not just use the ring that comes with the new pickup (or buy one)? Surely the screws at the corner where the ring attaches to the body will be in the same place, regardless of where the screw holes for the pickup itself are.

Humbuckers are pretty much a universal size, except for say vintage widerangers or custom creations. So getting a generic pickup ring should align properly by the corner screws like bacchus said. Some pickup rings are angled for les paul type guitars though, so keep that in mind if & when you shop around.

Yep, some will be angled for or will have a scalloped curve on the underside to match an arched or carved topped guitar, but they're fairly generic.

I've had some be a little bit out, but never anything too dramatic.

I had a Duncan Invader in my Squier 51 in the bridge and it was awesome. In split mode it jangled like a mofo.
You can either change out that bracket or drill a hole in the pickup bracket. I did that with my Toro. Worked just fine.
