Electro Harmonix Bass Big Muff used with guitar

Post by Golden_Sonic »

I did some researches to see if there was any black russian big muff clone around so I read on bigmuffpage.com/ that the Bass version is based on the Green Russian Big Muff (that has the same circuit of the Black version). I saw two videos on youtube, the first made by germanndude and the second by JJ Tanis (he compares the Green Russian with the nano bass version), and the bass version is played with guitar (single coils) in both the videos. I like how it sounds with guitar (it could be the fuzz I looking for! Good and cheap). What do you think? Here are the video:

solution: use the clean blend or put a tube screamer/rat in front of it or use an equalizer

When you press the accelerator past halfway it doesn’t actually go any faster, but the engine noise distorts

After watching the demos and side by sides, I think getting a bass big muff is a good idea, it sounds more trebley than a green muff, but you're comparing a 20+ year old pedal to new.

And if you're getting lost in the mix using a pedal, turn up.

Mids are where guitars sit in the frequency spectrum.. if there's not enough mids in YO TOANS, you'll just be buried by the rest of the band; no amount of rumble and fizz can change that.

Sure, you can peg the mids on your amp, but if you use other non-Muff sounds (clean tone, other dirt boxes, whatevs), it's gonna be like Honkcity up in there.

^Yup. Both sound pretty good for guitar, but the original Russian sounds darker and smoother than the bass RI. TBH I don't think the extra top-end sizzle of the RI would be of much benefit in a band setting. When mixing down, I find myself rolling off the highest and lowest frequencies of guitar and bass tracks, because they take up room in the mix without being heard. The raspiness of a fuzz and the lowest rumbles of a bass compete with things like cymbals and kick drums, so I have to lower the overall volume to compensate. The smoother sound of the Russian might sit in the mix a bit better.

That said, the extra gnarly rasp of the bass RI muff might sound rad for a fuzz bass solo though.

this
This what i mean. If I'm recording something where im only playing with a muff, I will turn the mids to 12 and everything else to 0. It actually sounds good, well, to me it does.
