Adventures In Telecasting

Post by Doog »

So I realised that I love Teles, especially my Doogcaster that some crazy guys that I love very much made for me.

I was gonna pick up another one for back-up in my rock band where I use said Tele-ish guitar, but figured doing something a little odder would be much more fun.

However.. dat bridge pickup is my jam, man. It's my bread and butter. It's all of the lunchtime analogies. Or is it the bridge itself that makes it sound like that? Or a magical combo of both?

Have you guys ever put a Tele bridge pickup in another guitar? Did it sound Tele-y?

Have you put a non 'Tele' single coil in a Tele bridge-equipped guitar? Did it still maintain the TWANG?

JAMMY BREAD AND BUTTER, GUYS. HELP ME KEEP IT

Yeah, there's a few (SD Twangbanger, Rio Grande Stelly) that always come up in these convos, curious to know if anyone's had any convincing results doing nifty DIY stuff using 'standard' parts.

I've got a DiMarzio Chopper in my Telemaster which is a Strat pickup and it sounds very Tele to me ... Nothing Stack humbucker about it.

I remember just wanting a Tele bridge pickup in all my guitars, I didn't do it though so don't have an answer.

I'm jumping on this too.
Looking to upgrade the stock bridge pickup in my Aerodyne Tele... what do you Tele-fuckers suggest to get basically exactly what Doog's after??

I went to an indie show here recently where almost all of the bands had at least one tele. My ears were ringing for days.

There was someone on the Gretsch Pages who put tele pickups in a Gretsch Anniversary Jr., although I'm afraid it might be like looking for a needle in a haystack, because the threads on that forum got all scrambled after some mishap. I'm not sure if they fixed it, but it was a mess, for example wrong titles on the threads, and I'm not even sure the threads were intact either.

When you press the accelerator past halfway it doesn’t actually go any faster, but the engine noise distorts

I was thinking of getting a twang banger recently. I think the word on the street is that it sounds good, but not like a real tele to an experienced pair of ears

I'm not sure if the bridge really affects things but people think it does. There may be something to be said for the angle and position of a tele bridge pickup, as well as constructional elements like bobbin size, which is why a strat sized pickup in a strat position isn't going to cut it

I've had tele pickups with and without base plates and both sounded like teles. Id still make sure any tele bridge pickup I bought had one though, cos I'm a mojo hound like that

So I suppose in a round about way, I think a tele pickup at the correct angle and distance from saddles will sound like a tele. Position is the thing to nail

Actually haven't fender released a Tele recently with 3 Tele pickups, you could try playing one of these to get an idea of how the pickup sounds without the bridge...

Edit:

Found it.

Bridge pickup has the ashtray middle and neck might give you an idea of how the pickup sounds without all the metal...

I've been planning to do that to my black/tort Strat for ages (minus the Bigsby, although it does look fucking cool). T'would certainly be the cheapest and most DIY-est option..

I put a Dimarzio Pre B1 in the bridge of my Tele. I spent years pissing around trying to get my Jazzmaster to sound like my Tele now does - I could have saved so much money if i'd bought a Tele from the start.

I can't be sure, but I BELIEVE it's the combo of pickup and bridge. I have the tele bridge/pickup in my Teligula (jag/tele hybrid) and it sounds like a tele on the bridge.
