Physically it is in good shape, but it's electronics are crap. I think the pickups are fine, but the pots have been changed out badly and it is a mess in there of bad grounds and unsoldered wires. I am going to pull all that crap out (along with the noisey stock toggle) and rewire it.
Worked on it today. Pulled out the crappy wiring, pots, and toggle and prepped it for the new parts. I also resoldered wires to the neck pickup. It has been spliced half way down the wire, so I just soldered in new full length ones. The screws holding the humbucker rings were also stripped out so I put in some bigger screws to help hold them down.
Neck pickup is dead. I checked with a friend who builds pickups to see about a repair and I am looking online for mini humbuckers as a replacement. Here is a gut shot of the pickup.
There is only one coil as I can see, so it is a single. But it has two rows of pole pieces and a very strange bar magnet (?) in the middle.
If you can find Dimarzio DP240 Vintage minibucker for cheap, I would recommend it as a replacement.
Edit:oh I just inderstood that "a strange bar magnet" is just a part of the frame to which polepieces are screwed. Very strange construction.
Speed knobs it had were import size and don't fit the new US pots so I put on some black witch hat knobs. Not sure if I will keep them yet or knot. Time will tell.
Pickup came back from Curtis Novak, so I got it installed. Went in just fine. I got it wired up and when I was trying to intonate, the 12th was still very flat with the bridge max forward. I figured out that my Gotoh bridge fit the stock cups and put that on instead and got it intonated. Never seen a guitar where intonation was good with ALL six maxed forward. Kind of makes me wonder if the nut is messed up or something? Something else kind of odd is middle position is out of phase. Neck loud full and warm, bridge nice and bright, middle kind of quiet. Anyways, here are pics.
Curtis emailed me back. He said just to pop the cover off and swap the two wires. (Which I did, but it was scary since they were bare copper wires.) I got that done and put it back in. No more quiet middle position.
