New "used" case for my Les Paul

Post by westtexasred »

When I bought my R9 it was used and came in this is SKB case

Image

That case didn't close well so I put it in this access case.

The access is a good case but I wanted a case that looked like a vintage case and tonite I got this one

Image

It looks pretty close to this 1960 case

Yes, its a modern Gibson custom shop case. It's what a new R9 would come in.

THe original case that my 2011 R9 would have come with was a black Custom Shop case like the one my 1996 R9 came in.

Starting around 2013 the Custom Shop switched to a new Lifton Style case with double neck support and more padding.

The case I bought is one of the Lifton reissues. They stopped making them in 2008 probably because they have the same problems as the originals: single neck support, thin padding and flimsy latches.Still, they look cool and they are harder to find now. Some people "age" them and try to pass them of as the real thing since those cases sell for $1500-$5000. Here is a history of Lifton and other case manufacturers (link)

You are right about the neck support. I have a 2014 Custom Shop Les Paul and it has the Lifton case, but with double neck support.
