mid boost= in the guitar or get a pedal?

Post by Progrockabuse »

i've been intrigued by various strats and the like that have that mid boost circuit. i know i've become quite a clapton fanboy of late and he might get a little "bad love" on here, but the idea of a boost circuit that you can just use from your guitar sounds quite nifty. there doesn't seem to be many pedal mid boosts without them being a bit spendy. i'm a bit wary of trying to install i mid boost into one of my guitars, because i'm shit at any kind of mod work. should i try a mid boost pedal to see if i like that kinda tone or just bite the bullet and attempt to fit the mid boost into my Mexican strat as a test?

If you are a one guitar, no pedals and one amp type of player, then I think this makes sense.

But I know you're not. I think getting a salt booster or similar tuned to boost mids or an eq pedal would make much more sense. Then you have it at the front of your board and it can be used with all your guitars.

Yeah, a pedal makes more sense. A simple EQ is probably the easiest/cheapest solution.

I'd just get a pedal unless you're feeling all Frank Zappa.

When you press the accelerator past halfway it doesn’t actually go any faster, but the engine noise distorts

Do you have to route the body to fit the tube-screamer circuit under the pickguard?

Artec makes one called the BCU. It's quite inexpensive.

I tried it out in a Strat a few years ago. I was actually very impressed. There is really almost no downside at all. First of all, the BCU has a push/pull bypass feature so you can decide whether you want it at all, and in passive, it's like it's not even hooked up. When activated, it's actually pretty transparent at noon, with no difference in gain that I can remember. Turning to the right would add mids (like going from single to humbucker), turning to the left would subtract mids (like going from humbucker to singles). It really is a good circuit and is a lot better than the Clapton circuit because A) the Clapton circuit only boosts whereas the BCU can go either way, B) BCU has a bypass and Clapton doesn't, C) BCU is a lot cheaper than Clapton, and D) BCU is a lot smaller than Clapton and therefore a lot easier to install.
Kicking and squealing Gucci little piggy.
