Bronco parts build...some thoughts/questions

Post by shackleton »

Hello!

Newbie here. Way back in 1990 or 1991, I found a Fender Bronco in a pawn shop for $75. Had never heard of one, never seen one, but I knew about Mustangs and this looked like one of those so I thought it would be cool to grab. It ended up being a late (October) '67 model in really nice shape, though badly in need of a new nut (which I talked my parents into handling for me). I later passed it on to a friend and it's whereabouts are unknown today (though I still have the original pickup), but I've gotten all nostalgic for it and over the past year have slowly been collecting parts to one day put another one together. Just today, I got one major piece of the puzzle, a '67 body.

I have a nearly complete bridge (missing the bar and the adjustment screw doesn't appear to be original), the '67-correct skirted "F" knobs, and, as previously mentioned the original pickup that came out of the own I owned. I've ordered the stuff needed to wire it all up, a new pickguard, and other stuff like that. I'll probably have the neck custom made, unless I see a good original example pop up somewhere (which would be ideal).

So, a couple of thoughts for you Bronco experts in the room: I'm toying with idea of putting in a different pickup, maybe something a bit hotter, rather than dropping in the original right off the bat. I want to maintain the original look with the black, covered pickup cover, but I've also considered throwing a Hot Rail in there (the buddy I gave the guitar to did that, and it sounded awesome live). That said, I'm very interested to see if that pickup will come to life again. Any of you Bronco players have some modern pickups you like?

Also, any ideas on good aftermarket neck sources? I've done business with Warmoth and have been really impressed with their stuff, but if there's something else I should consider, I'd love to hear about them.

Hopefully, this project won't take much longer and I'll have something to show sooner rather than later!

Welcome.

You can get an Allparts Jaguar neck for $130 or so off Ebay. I think that's the price of them new.
