I wanted a Jazzmaster for ages because of Robert Smith and Kevin Shields.

Turns out I like the Vista Jagmaster much better. That purchase was influenced by you all (Dots' Jag HH, Robroe's Excalibur, the Jagmaster thread). My Jag-Stang purchase was also inspired by you lot, obviously.

If we had a LIKE button (which I'm glad we don't) this is the occasion I'd use it...

chronology:

1. squier strat to sound like hendrix
2. fender jaguar to sound like kurt cobain (lol at stock cij unpotted shitboy pickups)

after that point it became a case of knowing a particular sound i wanted. the 12 string stuff i guess comes from mcguinn and marr but more about liking jangliness in general

White/Tort Jaguar cause of Robert Smith, Joshua Von Grimm and Brian Molko.

Rickenbacker Bass copy cause of Peter Hook and Nicky Wire.

Gretsch Jim Dandy cause it reminded me a lot of Teh Kurtz Stella.

Les Paul for Marc bolan and billy fucking gibbons.. Strat because that's what the dude that sold it to me had.. Then I just kept getting them. Tele for too many list and jaguar cause of Kurt. Yes I went there. Sheraton 2 for john Lee hooker and josh homme/lots of cool alt guitarists use them and they sound great for blues.

The only guitar I have that is inspired by anyone else is my Victor Baker archtop.

Gilad Hekselman is a huge influence of mine, so my guitar is pretty close to his, there a few alterations, the largest being the neck shape and the depth of the body.

US Standard Strat I got in 1998 as I was really in Smashing Pumpkins.

I had 2 Jazzmasters due to my love of Sonic Youth, but realised I much prefer the sound of a Tele.

US Standard and Mex Standard Tele because, although none of them used them, in my head I can get sounds kind of like Duane Denison, John McGeoch and John McKay. Plus they sound like I always wanted my Jazzmasters to sound like, but they never could.

My first electric guitar was a Squier Affinity Telecaster. I wanted a Tele because at the time I was obsessed with the Toy Dolls (I know right - is there a worse band to be obsessed with?) and Olga always played one.

Then I bought a Jagmaster because (similar to Noirie) Josh from The Horrors played a Jaguar and it was the closest thing I could afford.

Otherwise since then, my guitar purchases haven't often been influenced by specific people. Although the white SG200 was definitely inspired by ShortScale (equal parts Fran and Stewart, I'd say).

I got my first telecaster because of Joe Strummer. Every one since has been because I loved that Tele, so guess they're his fault too.

Definitely put strat singles in the neck positions of multiple telecasters because of Marty Stuart.

My love of Rickenbackers traces back to my teenage discovery of this photo

Image

Although it was Johnny Marr that influenced the black 330. If I had bought a midnight blue 4003 you could blame FLCL but I bought a fireglo one so blame Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim

Even though many guitar players I listen to used mustangs, it was Ty Segall's that inspired my sonic blue mustang

None of my other current guitars were purchased with anyone in mind. I fact there's only several in my history that I could trace back to an inspiration. That Vox 12 string I had was due to BJM, and if it wasn't for our own Timhulio I might not have known to snatch up that Hagstrom Viking way back when.

It has really made the rounds. You're like the 3rd person here who has claimed past ownership, and I got it from a dude here.

Only a few of them have any clear influence I can remember.

Burns Batwing: Gaz Coombes, supergrass. He actually played a Marquee and I think a Bison every now and then. So I guess he inspired the Marquee I owned before the Batwing, but that for stolen. So I got the Batwing which had a big Bison-style headstock.

Not entirely sure there were any specific influences after that...

The Epiphone Riviera P93 was a kind of nod the bands like BRMC and Jesus Mary Chain stuff, always loved the image of those bands. But I don't listen to them much and I use the guitar differently.

The Jaguar I bought because I'd never had one. I hadn't listened to Nirvana or Sonic Youth for a very long time but I guess they're still the reason that I like Jags, so I should probably still go with them.

Probably the only one was my Jagmaster, which I got for kurtz. Even the Jag-stang, I was conscious of the fact that it was his guitar and really wished it wasn't because I liked it so much.

Oh, and I suppose the Squier fretless for getting Jaco.

There were specific artists that locked certain guitars in my consciousness. I guess it's safe to say they inspired my interest in them.

Strat - Hendrix/Frusciante

Les Paul - All the rock/metal I listened to growing up. Mostly Slash tho.

SG - Krieger/Zappa/Iommi/Angus

Jaguar - Graeme Coxon
