what to do?

put some strings on it and a setup, leave like it is (easier to sell down the road without taking a big hit, but less likely to play it at all)

Lauren's parents did it again, that is to say got me a yard sale guitar for Christmas. Some years back it was an Aria Pro II Fullerton (black strat) that I painted brown and put gfs pickups in.

This time it was one of these, with the cool (to me) pointed swingeresque headstock.

Body has its share of small dings and scratches but no major damage aside from a small chip in the back of the headstock.

While I probably would have preferred the $25 in the form of a gift card or something, tbh I probably might have bought it if I had seen it for the price as well. So here it is, a strat copy with infinite possibilities, some too time consuming or expensive to justify. I'm leaning towards a p90 setup now because I like p90s but have nothing with them right now.

Put a dragonfire loaded pickguard on there for fun. They're cheap so if you don't like it it's not much of a loss.

Nice score. Love that headstock, they should have kept on using it. But then, I did buy a Swinger.

If the current pickups sound good then HSS tort pickguard. If they sound like shit, then tort pickguard with white soap bar P90's. Cream PU's would look good, but I'm thinking how you can minimize your modding cost utilizing the current controls. I did a mock up on another site, but couldn't get it to open with my OS. Fucking Windows 8 sucks!!!!

Thanks. The pickups are standard ceramic squier fare. I can't test it right now cause I'm still in FL away from my good amps and it's missing a saddle (not a big deal), but I'm pretty sure they're not what I'm after. I think I'm sold on P-90's because I've never had a guitar with them, aside from a phat cat once that I loved and a P rails which I was meh about.

Trick is now finding proper P-90's. Does anyone make good cheap p90's? Looks like stratosphere sells gibsons for $99 shipped a set which is also the approximate cost for used duncans, I've found entwistles for $75 a set, and based on reviews the really cheap artecs and the like might not really have the "p90 sound".

I'd get a jazzmaster body, get P-90s , do no switching on the pickguard, and have only two stacked tone/volume knobs for each pickup.

I can't speak to after market P90's sound quality. I always get used Gibson p90's. Gibson gives you that nice fat crunchy single coil sound when you crank them up. I have two Epiphone SG's with p90's, China made, and they are a good copy, measure higher output on my Ohms meter and are bit brighter sounding, but still a good alternative.

If it has a swimming pool route you will still need to route it for the neck soapbar P90 to fit properly which will also require a custom pickgaurd to cover the extended route.

I love P90's but if you play near bad wiring or lighting get ready to hear that 60 Hz hum. Maybe put in some kent armstrong silent p-90s. All other silent P-90's are good but very expensive.

Or just make a dummy coil from one of the original pickups... Aaand there go all your hum problems.

I may go this route, not sure yet, tbh your post is the first I'd heard of this so I'm not too sure I'd wire it right.



I just picked up a barely used set of Duncan P-90's (SP901B/N) for $60 from my local shop Parkway, where I also had a $25 gift certificate. The P-90's actually fit the hb routes perfectly, now I just need a pg.

Got my pickguard yesterday, now just need to sort something for wiring. Thinking 500k tone/volume pots and because I hate the volume knob position on strats, puting a round toggle switch to switch between .022 and .047 caps.

Think I'm going to keep the cream covers instead of total blackout.
