NGD: 1971 FENDER COMPETITION MUSTANG - LEFTY

Post by wetbelly »

Well, the search for my own personal holy grail of Mustangs has nearly come to a close. If only it had the matching headstock… But absolutely no complaints. This thing is in unbelievable condition… A few extra screws in the pickguard and a swapped out nut are the only unoriginal items on the guitar. These pictures won't do it any justice, but the sun was on it's way down and was casting terrible shadows so everything is super dark. Maybe I'll get some better shots tomorrow. Nice flame on the neck… Slightest hint of bursting around the body's edges... Anyway, here she is, my new favorite:

That looks nice. In fact, it looks brilliant for 1971. How's it play?

Plays and sounds incredible. Only bummer is the huge neck pocket on the body. I had to shim the one side a full mm to keep the high E string from pulling off the side of the neck. You can tell if you look at the first picture.

A tune o matic/StayTrem/Mastery might make that better cause of the narrower string spacing. Sounds fucking annoying.

Both are pretty righteous. This thing is super lightweight and plays like butter. Definitely will stay in my top 3.
