NEW STRAT DAY VOL. 3 (METAL EDITION)

Post by Fakir Mustache »

I wanted one of these for a while, so I finally got one:

it's really well made, the neck is pretty good, the pickups too, even has a rounded heel:

I think it's the best guitar I've ever played that cost 149 quid new, clearly the highest quality new guitar I've seen in this price range.

It's an Ibanez GRG121SP-BKN, if anyone wants to know.

When you press the accelerator past halfway it doesn’t actually go any faster, but the engine noise distorts

lol'd at this but it actually has a purpose.

G = Gio series
RG121 = Model number
SP = Standard production (as opposed to DX / Deluxe which is a bit more fancy)
BKN = Black Night (color)

They're actually quite good for the price.

I was thinking SP is "Special", but I don't really know.

I'm not even sure I consider it a superstrat, the shape is kind of different but it has a scratchplate.

Or SP=ScratchPlate

I played a GRG121DX a month or two ago, right after I played a Squier Bullet Mustang, and I thought the GRG was much better. The GRG121DX has no scratchplate, satin finish and different fingerboard markers.

They both have sort of a satin finish on the back of the neck, but it doesn't feel unfinished like the Squier. The one I got was much nicer than the GRG121DX I played in the shop, and I only tried it because I wanted to order this one and it was the most similar they had.

I have a GRG121DX in the silverburst and it's my go to for daily usage, along side the Tele. I've wanted to get another Ibanez cheap because they're always decent quality but I really don't need another.

I don't think that model is available in the U.S. Ibanez have made quite a few models that are only available in Europe and Asia.

That sucks, that pickguard looks absolutely rad. Oh well, it's probably for the best, the last thing I can afford right now is another guitar.

Just did this:

added the Duncan Designed from my Squier Jaguar. I wanted more subtle in the middle position than with the stock neck pickup, which measures about 10k ohms. Even though the bridge pickups is about 17K, it was still pretty loud.

I'm thinking "SP" has to mean "Special".

Here's a blue GRG121SP, limited edition, no scratchplate:
