Damn, that looks hot. I always wanted bird inlays on my Strat. I'm definitely up for spending another £1000 to get bird inlays.

Not.

Put a bird on it! I'm going to put a bird on it! I'm putting a bird on it! Look at it - it's flying! It's free!

It's so much worse. Those were Janie Hendrix squeezing a few more bucks out by licensing Jimi's name to the Gibson corporation, who commissioned an import no-name wonkacaster to be sold for under $200 in Best Buy and stuff. These are a top-of-the-line PRS artist signature model that cost over $2000 because John Mayer is trying to squeeze a few more bucks out of his own name.

If Gibson had actually made a Gibson USA Jimi Hendrix guitar that was a Strat knock-off and retailed for a similar price to a Les Paul Standard, then the situations would be equivalent. As it happens if they had been in that sort of deal they probably would've made a 10,000 limited run Flying V or SG like the ones Jimi liked to do slow blues numbers on. The fact that they didn't suggests they held less cards in the arrangement than one might suspect (and Experience Hendrix LLC have a reputation for being cagey about the particulars of licensing deals).

I also find it ridiculous that Mayer is coming right out the gate with PRS in the form of a signature Strat. He went off FMIC Custom Shop after yonks, who the hell trusts his judgment when it comes to a purpose-built PRS model that was only made because he's musically lost without a blues cover performed via neck+middle single coils through a Dumble? Fuck this floppy-haired doucheroller, I hope he gets run over by a bus in front of his parents.

I have no particular feelings about Mayer either way, but I think this is a bit silly. I’ve seen a video *cough Anderton’s cough* where they talk about how it’s not supposed to be a Strat copy, but then go on about how familiar it feels, etc. If your point is to prove how it’s not just a rebranded Strat, don’t go on and on about how it feels and plays like a Strat. I give these things two years tops. This year they’ll be floated by Mayer fanboys, and literally NO ONE ELSE will buy them after that.

Gibson seems to be allergic to good 60's re-issue Flying V's. They make them in very limited numbers when they do. They did a Jimi Flying V for like 2 seconds, and it could have been much cooler. I also don't understand how a Hendrix signature model from Fender isn't always a staple signature in the line-up and at different price points too, maybe the estate really is difficult/shrewd to get a deal going with.

They've also never reissued a big-pickguard SG Custom with 3 pickups, despite the '68 SG Standard being the die from which most post-1990 SGs have been cut. That was one of the first electric guitars I ever loved the look of. I do prefer the more focused sound of SGs with pickup rings now, but it still makes me weak in the knees.

They had this pretty much from 1996 (30th anniversary milestones every year for 4) until the family LLC came into play, I think that's why I buy much of the shrewdness stories. You have to wonder why else Fender would suddenly stop making sporadic Hendrix sigs altogether when they've kept their Clapton and Beck sig Strats going nonstop for 30 years (and unlike those two guitars and many other sig models, there's no special deals to worry about with other hardware/pickup manufacturers because all of Jimi's guitars were stock).

To be fair in all of this, it's Jimi Hendrix. Considering the wide array of people his influence may reach who are in the market for an electric guitar, he's probably selling as many Squier Affinities and luther-built coffeetable strats as he is limited run signature FMIC models with a decal of his autograph on the headstock. To that end, maybe some Best Buy guitar made more sense to Experience Hendrix than a limited/expensive guitar, who can say.

John Mayer is gettin' a handful of boomers Hard Again but that's about it. That's why this $2500 PRS is worse than the import Strats Gibson distributed as Hendrix guitars, in my opinion. One markets a rockstar guitar to impressionable kids and one markets a rockstar guitar to impressionable lawyers.

Very cool SG. I'm a big fan of the vibrola and 3 pickup look, and think they're the only guitar that can reliably pull off gold hardware (except maybe some Gretschs).

Really? If you just look at the necks on my jaguar and jazzmaster you can easily tell the jazzmaster neck is rounder. You can also tell when you try to bend the strings too much.
It’s not like the hugest difference in the world but it’s noticeable.

Two thoughts, watching that video:

1) That's a hard sell, fair play to him for the effort.
2) Man, I love how strats sound, and this guy is prettay, pretty good at the imitating other players in the gear demo stylee.

Strat guy gets non fender company to build him a strat type thing... yawn. Sounds nice and I'm sure the lawyers will love the bird inlays.

How annoying is he?

I watched five minutes and decided I'll never play guitar again.
Did our demos ever come across like that? I made a conscious decision not to go blah blah blah.
