Incoming NGD: Yamaha SA-30T

Post by Nick »

To replace the SA50 that dots smashed :?

After watching all sorts of SA's on eBay for months (primarily the SA50) I've found it nearly impossible to find one that isn't missing a trem arm, knob tops or a pickguard, or had replacement tuners or bridge installed, or the upper strap button relocated. So I decided finding an all original example is important. I also began to have an appreciation for the more understated charm of the simpler early models with the black humbucker covers, and the even simpler binding and inlays of the lower tier SA-30. A little disappointed I won't be able to have a go on the wacky jaguar-style tremolo of the 50, but this was about half the price of the cheapest nice examples of those, and the trem setup looks similar to the Schaller bigsby style on my Ovation I already know and love, so I'll probably feel more at home with it.

This one looks to need a bit of love to the finish and frets, as well as some electrical work. Hoping it's just an unsoldered wire somewhere, bad input jack, just about anything could be the culprit. But most importantly it's 100% complete, including the OHSC. Will post pics and maybe an unboxing video when it arrives

Dig it, the horns make it look like the lovechild of a 335 and a Travis Bean

the hooked horns were admittedly a big part of the draw for me. Reminds me of the Ibanez Blazer I used to have, also Rickenbacker basses and even more oddball stuff like the Ural 650. Dunno why just love that feature on guitars.

I'd fix that floating bridge before you let dot play it. You know how heavy handed he is.

Nice

I'm becoming paranoid about this now; USPS status has been "label created USPS awaiting item" since Monday. Seller claims they sent it on Tuesday at the latest. This is one of the reasons I never print labels from home.

A quick search of the seller's neutral and negative feedback did show one instance where a buyer claimed the transaction was cancelled minutes after their winning bid, but no instances of item not received.

Fingers crossed :?

Picked it up on my way home from work today! Wanted to do an unboxing vid but my phone was dying and I was too excited. Anyway it is very solid and I love everything about it. At first I was optimistic that the electrical issues were just in the jack but no such luck. Also when I tightened up te b string the nut broke right there.

So right now it's at Parkway for those two issues. I might also just have them do a full cleaning and setup, for some reason I enjoy polishing up old frets and was looking forward to doing that part myself....on the other hand I'm waiting so long for this it might be cool to just be able to pick it up all done.
