New Amp Day: Marshall Origin 20 Head

Post by Progrockabuse »

I missed my JTM45, it was a great amp but too bloody loud. My old band never liked it and convinced me to go back to my dual terror. I regretted selling the JTM45 and I happened upon the origin range. Looks like a Plexi, sounds like a Plexi but with power scaling and an FX loop. Sounds brilliant through the purple cab of James, that cab has mojo arrows galore. It's still fucking loud for a 20/7/.5 scaling amp and you still have to crank it for a driven sound. Mikes making me a box to stick in the loop to attenuate it.

edit: how to I post photos that are hosted on google photos in a thread? just tried and it didn't work.

You could ask mike to make a proper attenuator using a variac, which would go between the amp and the cab, not the loop. Can add various resistors in a switch to make it brighter or darker and it’s passive so no power required to it.

I made one myself. The variac was about 30 quid.

I have a Weber mini mass attenuator, but the ohm selector switch got damaged when some twat knocked off my amp at a gig. I would swap out the switch but I'm shit at soldering.

Ask Mike if he can fix it?

You'll need a filepath that ends with the filename type, oldskool

I'm not even sure Google photos will allow hotlinking/embeds?

If you're trying to drive the power-amp section for dirt based on what I've read, FX loop 'attenuators' don't really do anything, alas :( You're not driving your power-amp by simply cranking up the master dial if you've also vastly decreased the input that's going into it from the preamp :/

Either way, I'm sure it sounds SICK, nice oneeeee

I'm not sure it will have enough gain for your needs even with the attenuator, but I guess it's interesting to try out new things.

If you want to post pics, our site has the uploader. You have to apply for an account, but sometimes the mods don't notice so you have to shoot them a message to validate it.

When you press the accelerator past halfway it doesn’t actually go any faster, but the engine noise distorts

I've been using my saltbooster in the loop turned down low to mimic a passive attenuator. If I set the master to 10/11 I clock and the gain at 2/3 I clock, I can get that classic early marshall crunch that I'm after, it's just too fucking loud without something to tame it in the loop.

I didn't want to bother Mike too much with trying to fix my mini-mass, and the passive loop method will make a nice footswitchable volume boost if i was to gig with it.

Yeah that’s fair. It’d just be preamp tube breakup without power tube breakup. It’d depend on the type of amp how well that works and on that Marshall I bet you get a shit load of preamp stuff going on.

Google is not 1.0

To post photos here you need a tripod or geocities acct

I've seen your new setup on Instagram though and it rules. If you try and share gram photos on here I can hear the 1.0 scale super structure creaking from it trying to understand all that technology from the futureeeee
