Fender Jazzmaster pickup replacement.

Cut the new pickguard today, not bad.

Need to decide how to equip it. Option A is two filtertrons, while option B is a neck filtertron and a Telecaster pickup in the bridge.

Needs to get rid of the frets too. Or, get rid of the neck, but leave only the frets and blocks.

Am I missing something, in as much that the mock up of option B does not actually depict a std tele bridge pickup? Either way, I'd go filtertron and hot rails. That's cool as mince.

Yeah, I should have pointed out in the text that the Tele bridge I was talking about was a hot rails type (an Artec I bought ages ago for a laugh, apparently it has an alnico magnet... dunno how true that is).

It still has the three screw fitting though, you massive pedant. Humbuckers in telecasters are Gods will.

Oh look, it isn't an ekwatts project thread without several months between tiny, incremental updates.

I finally cut one of the filtertron routs into the pickguard template. This is why I work with foam PVC for templates: I'm familiar with it and even though it's fairly easy to work with basic hand tools, it's also still pretty sturdy. I basically did this with a craft knife and sandpaper.

So I still need to do the neck pickup and then cut the actual routs using the template, then the bevelling. Then mount all the electronics and stuff.

So see you all in February next year.

LOOK AT HOW FAST I'M WORKING ON THIS

I'd taken a photo of the back yesterday. Obviously. This is the front. The original routs for the humbucker rings are drawn on around the filtertron routs, I stuck them in just to get a better idea of the placement of the filtertrons.

Just need to drill holes for the bridge and switch and then I can finish the actual pickguard.

Yeah, but it snapped the corner of the piece, so it's unsalvageable.

I have an alternative but I've had to order a little extra plastic.

Quite honestly, I'm more annoyed at my second (excellent) template being ruined than the actual pickguard.

Yeah, I've already started on another, I'm actually going to cut it from individual white and black sheets of acrylic I have lying around and then laminate them together. That's what I did for my teardrop and it worked really well. 0.75mm plastic sheet is like 90p from some places. Difference is it's kind of matt in finish so I'm going to have to do a smooth sanding and then buff it for that shiny shiny pickguard finish, but I can basically rough out the shape with a scalpel really easily to begin with. The only reason I didn't take this route in the first place was because I wanted to do it all "properly", using a router and a template and stuff, even though I knew I could achieve the same end with a technique that I was much more comfortable with.

Oh well. Shows how you should stick to what you know.

Although it has been good experience. I wouldn't mind trying to cut out a full guitar body after this at some point. I saw a custom guitar on instagram the other day which was a Rickenbacker 4003 bass body but kitted out as a six string guitar and thought it looked sweet as fuck.
