The Reutz mod changes the capacitor and frequency response in the feedback loop. That is why it sounds different.

Let me try to explain this here. With the Rat, you have a band of frequencies that are favored and have the highest gain. These are in the upper-mids. As you keep turning up the gain, that hits a ceiling (there are limits to how much you can amplify before it hits the max). So those higher frequencies are the same level, but the lower end that previously wasn't as loud relative to the high end goes up, and they are eventually amped the same. Thus, it sounds like there is more low end as you turn up the gain.

Problem is, at this point you have overloaded the bandwidth of the OA, and everything starts to sound like a woofy mess. Normally this is good. BUT, when you roll out those high ends, you end up with a bunch of overloaded chip tone in the low end. Basically I'm saying the low end that is amped up sounds like shit. That pedal would do so much better with a tone knob that varies the cap in the feedback loop to change the fundamental response rather than a filter.

Wasn't that Joe Gagan? I've seen his designs DIY but have never seen any commercial effects based on it. I would imagine had he gone commercial successfully he would have asked to have his schems removed from the stompbox forum. Thus, I don't think it did.

I thought about it a bit on the bus home. He went commercial with Nine Volt Nirvana selling a bunch of his designs including the Dino Fuzz, Dino Drive and Bronto Boost.

He got a lot of credit for keeping the designs up. As I say he went bust with the project so it was never really successful besides getting a lot of critical acclaim for the transparent nature of the Bronto Boost.

i like an OD with a lot of sustain and that doesn't ruin the natural tone of the guitar. I also like OD pedals that have a lot of range when it comes to the amount of overdrive. It doesn't need a lot of knobs basically just an Overdrive, a Tone, and a Volume knob.

speaking of Joe Gagan, looks like he has resurfaced. Still owes lots of people money and pedals.

Interesting. I wonder what Z.Vex thinks about him moding and reselling his pedals.

That Shizzybane needs to get himself a shortscale and joins us over here. We need the extra comedy.
