Yeah, Behringer pretty much makes the very bottom of the barrel in the music business today. I've used their littlest eurorack mixer, and it is definitely teh sux0rs. teh EQ is liek sooo not 1337.

You made the right choice with the SM57 though. There's no substitute for it, which is pretty much why everybody, everywhere, has always used it.

What's wrong with Crate?

I stand by the fact that Behringer Eurorack mixers are fab. I have one and Gareth has a larger version. He also has a Mackie mixer so we know our stuff.

Personally if you're doing aggressive EQ at tracking you're a weirdo. Get the mic placement right you twathead.

Check out the Sennheiser e609, I really love this mic. It's a little bright, but it works great. I never want to use another mic on my amp for a gig EVER. It's completely really sweet for clean sonds too.

If your still stuck on an SM57, check out some of it's predecessors (Shure Unidyne series) on ebay, I got one for $12. It's a little darker character than the sm57.

Also, if your gonna end up getting a mixer and stuff, you might as well pick up a nice condenser microphone. I like the Studio Projects B1, It seems to sound kind of thin and high-endy, but in a full mix, it never fails. I prefer it for vocals and clean guitar sounds.

The other condensers I use are the MXL 603s mics. They sound really smooth with a little boost in the very high end. They're my go to mics for drum overheads, acoustic guitars and things that I want to record in stereo.

Used SM57 ftw. It's often the best choice at any price. There's a reason that studios with 10 zillion dollar mic cabinets regularly use $90 57's on guitar cabs (and snare drums) - they work. Lots of other mics work great as well, but not many at the posted "sub SM57 price" point...

The only mic I would ever chose to use on a snare has and will always be an SM57. Just love the sound of it.

That statement is said so often it's like an urban legend or something. It's not very accurate, but hardly worth arguing against.

I realize you said it's not worth arguing about, but I'm making that statement as much from experience as "legend". What's not accurate about it?

It's like a decent quality microwave meal. It's very easy to get it to do what you want it, and it does sort of work for it's purpose. It's always going to be a bit shit though, and you may as well do the job properly if you're going to bother.

I don't absolutely hate them, but I wouldn't want to use one if I had an option. I've never found a situation where it was the best mic for the job. It's just that it pretty much sounds ok on everything, so it's quick, easy and you don't have to think about it.

I agree, in sentiment, but I think alot of credible engineers and producers do think it's the best mic for some things (namely guitar cabs and snare drums). World class studios use 57's all the time, but world class restaurants don't serve microwave meals (hopefully)! In any case, at $90 new, it's a good value, and a used one would fit the bill of the original post (imho, ymmv, and all that)!

I can't speak for anything else you mentioned, but I also have 2 old Unidyne mics, and they are fantastic for acoustic & vocals. However, and you might disagree Sloan, despite my best placement efforts I can't get it to sound that great in front of a cab.
