FAO: Anyone who paints guitar bodies...

Post by Aug »

A few weeks ago, I discovered a great little paint shop on Lankershim Blvd, here in the valley. It's a mom and pop sort of operation. Nice folks, too.

Anyway, I discovered this stuff:

Absolutely amazing. It dries quickly, doesn't clog your sandpaper, comes in white, builds really nicely and comes in a 15 ounce can. The really good news? $10 a can before tax and NO SHIPPING!

I'm sure most of you guys can research the name and find a dealer near you. If not, here's the name and number of the shop:

Ray's Auto Paint and Supplies
6517 Lankershim Blvd.
North Hollywood, CA 91606

818.769.4344
213.877.1897

Further info:

Transtar Autobody Technologies, Inc.
2040 Heiserman Drive, Brighton, MI. 48114

Shit. I forgot about this thread. I bought some KILZ and it supersucked. And now I think I am done with primer forever! The KILZ came out too fast and dripped in milliseconds. I have some light sanding to do.

I was looking at the Transtar web site and some of their primers are nitro! I haven't found the can like yours but if nothing else I will email them. Your can almost looks like the old generic labels. It should just say PAINT on it in block letters.

I asked a question about Butterscotch on Reranch--you'd think when I finally had a Strat or Tele question they would answer it. Nothing. After 15 viewings with no responses I just deleted it. I can fucking guess at it. I am trying to figure out how to do a butterscotch/blonde to look aged. I know the colors fade and get yellower over time, but I didn't know which would be more pronounced. I guess I really don't give a shit. There are so many variations in color over the past 50 years depending on whether it started as blonde or scotch.

I read somewhere to get a butterscotch finish, do blonde then finish with a tinted clear coat. You just add as much tinted clear coat depending on how buttery you want it.

Is it like a primer/sealer? Kickass.. I used white duplicolor primer on my bronco but it was hard as hell to find it! The only shop that had it was advance auto parts, and I had to go to 3 different ones in greenville and buy all of their primer to finish the bronco. It was fucking insane how hard it was to find that stuff!

that sucks, cause that primer sands off into a perfect powder.

Also, I used the gloss clear (acrylic) over the laquer color and it worked beautifully. Fuck Reranch and their constant "we're closed: at a BBQ" bullshit. Also, fuck all those cheap-ass paints at Autozone/Pep Boys/Advance Auto Parts/etc...

If you want professional results, use the good stuff the first time.
