custom archtop and whatnot(updated!!!)MORE(95.73%DONE)MORE!!

Post by robert(original) »

first time in shortscale history.
ima gonna be, and i am building a dot style archtop with a trapiece style piece, it will be pretty standard and its for somone that lives here in indiana.
here are some of the pics from the first two weeks of school.
these are some trapieze style pieces that i was playing with.
the one on the left is solid ebony, and the one on the right is solid maple.
Image
this is the wood, including the solid ebony finger board, hand cust bitches!!!
Image
this is the neck jig for glueing the heel and tha head stock.

Image

this is when i glued the veneer on the headstock, this adds strength to the stock an covers the glue line, even tho its gonna be painted over.
Image
this is the band sawed ouitline of everything and some shaping.
Image
Image

this is the wood for the rest of the body. solid sitka spruce and figured maple sides.

wow.

fucking impressive, robert!

I'm certainly interested in some 24" scale fingerboards...I think with the new shop and all dave's tools that he's throwing into the mix, making a neck is the next level for me.

dude, you can do it.
right now i can do maple boards for 10 even, unradius, 15 radiused, and ebony is 20 radiused
see with the maple i have it but i have to rip it sand it and slot it and radius, the ebony i have to buy from the shop teacher for 15 and slot it, cut it and radius it, and that shit is heavey and dense, and take note at how much stew mac and the likes charge for boards, its rediculouse, and they only ever do gibby or fender 25 1/2 scales, nothing else.

well, i guess if each person can give me the amount and the kind of wood,
plus the radius then that would help out alot.
and if you really really really want i can compound radius the fingerboard, but! remember that im doing this stuff by hand with a radius block so i will have to ask for 5 more dollars just cuz i would basically be radiusing twice.
p.s. the sooner the order the better but you basically have 1 month from today.

this'll probably get moved to the classifieds now, but i'd like just one fretboard. maple, 24" scale, and 7.5 radius (or whatever vintage fender is).
how much will that amount to?

lets say 20.00 even for the fingerboard.
do know where you want your relief holes?
as in if you ever need to lift the board do know what frets you want me to them on or do you just want me to kinda do the standard and tell you about it?
ususally its the bottom of the 3rd and then the top of the 12th.

That seems like a cracking price Rob. What sort of price do you charge for your custom necks? If I ever make a custom guitar, I'd totally be willing to pay you for a neck, I'm a really big fan of your work!

i don't know. it doesn't really matter to me. i'll probably never take it apart. how do you wanna work out payment? do you accept paypal?

it's really cool that you're offering to do this. my dad and i are working on making a custom neck for my jaguar. this will save us a lot of trouble.

malik, thanks alot man,
im not really sure, it all depends on the scale, size, width and inlays of the neck itself. along with wood and, man there is all sorts of varying factors but
basically anywhere from 150-600 for a neck.
and bubbles i do accept paypal. but don;t wory about trying to pay me until i have it completed and ready to send to you.
and whats this you say about a custom jaguar?
that could be really really cool.
do you want me to put in dots as well?
it would only take a few more minutes and i won;t charge you anymore.
im guessing black since you r getting a maple board and you want them standard?
anywho, this probly should be moved to the whore house.
but at anyrate.
take it easy everyone and im off, i shall speak with you all again next weekend.

actually, i'm gonna try and make the neck look like this:

my dad has tons of tools and luthiery know-how, so he should be able to handle the whole project, but i don't think he has the right tools for radiusing (is that even a word?). he lives in tennesse, but since i'm gonna be out there in a few weeks, he agreed to help me make the neck. eventually i'd like to have a body made in sunburst, but for now, i'm just gonna put it on my jaguar.

maple necks with blocks are trashing as fuck. you might as well put pieces of electrical tape on a normal maple neck.

you wouldn't happen to know where to get black blocks, would you? that's the one thing i can't find. i figure if it comes down to it, i'll buy a pickguard blank and cut it up.

i don;t actually know, i just assumed that i could get it thru stu mac.
the guard idea would work pretty well i would assume.
i thought about using ebony for the blocks at one point cuz i can get it pretty cheap and its a really nice wood.

any who
these are some random photoes of what i got accomplished today on the neck for tracys telecaster.
Image

Image
its a vintage v style cut neck so thats why i tried to take these next few photos.

Okay, Robert, how's about I get you plans for an all-maple Mandocaster neck and all you have to do is cut a few of them them out for me? I can do the fretting later. (Not that I know shit about doing that yet). Would that be a time/cost savings? I could do the inlays and the nut, etc.

That would just be a mini Fender maple neck and maple cap, or a one piece with no truss. I would prolly not need a truss rod until I get to the trem stage. Maybe one could be maple with maple cap. Or hell, I guess if you did one or two and showed pics maybe I could figure it out.
