I split my AVT cab into 2 2x12's

Post by More Cowbell »

So, I was gettin tired of my tone, and did alot of googlin and found that if I used my head in the stereo way, the tone would sound so much better, and if I upgraded speakers that would help heeps too! So, my bandmate plays through a CRATe cabinet w/upgraded celestions in it, so I stole 2 of them out of it and wired them in, and added another jack to the back of the cabinet, and now I have 2 4ohm and 2 8ohm speakers. I tell you. The sound is so much better, especially with the fx's, I can hear delays and chorus so much betta. Now I'ma have to get some greenbacks or summit for the cab now.

YES I KNOW MIKE, I NEED TO POST UP A DEMO. I WILL, I WILL.

Nice work - how do you have these 4 and 8 ohm speakers wired then?

Yeah, I wired them up and played till 2am last night, it was that much better. Before...I always felt as if the fx were being drowned out when I used them and the only ones you could really ever hear were slight delay and verbs, I was never happy w/flange or modulation and now I can use and hear them! :D

Kind of a dumb design for marshall to make it 75w per channel and avertise it as 150w amp and split the fx's out stereo, now the ebay hunt begins for the cabinet speakers, prolly 2 greenbacks and 2 ? i have yet to decide.

Greenies are only 25Watts innit. in parallel or series that is 50 Watts so you'll not be able to dime your amp (not that you are anyway).

How exactly did you wire the speakers? A mix of 4 and 8 ohms will give you an odd total impedance.

I wired the 2 4ohms together out to one jack, then the 2 8 ohms together to another jack, so it now has 2 inputs 2 2x12's.

I dime this thing out when we play gigs outdoors, so greenbacks are out of the picture now. :(

Hmm. You should really have all the same impedance speakers in there (get 8 ohms ones).

If you've done series one side is 8 ohms and the other is 16 ohms and your amp is seeing 5.3 ohms.

If you did parallel it's 2 and 8 ohms and your amp is seeing 1.6 ohms.

Neither of them is good.

What do you mean by, his amp is "seeing" that impedance?

I mean exactly that. amp speaker outputs are in parallel so that's what the output transformer is "seeing" as the impedance it is driving. Most Solid State heads have a minimum impedance requirement whereas tube heads you should MATCH with a tap the cab impedance(s). If he has seried and the minimum is 4 ohms he is ok, otherwise not so much.

The back of my head has 2 outputs one for 8ohms and one for 4 or 8 ohms. I wired up 2 to have 4 ohms to use with the 4ohm output, and the other 2 for the 8ohm output. Its basically like I have 2 seperate 2x12 cabinets housed in my 4x12 box.

So you wired them in series, so one pair is 8ohms and the other is 16ohms?

So the two 8 ohm speakers are in parallel to give 4 ohms and the 4 ohms are in series to give 8 ohms?

Your manual says:
"b) AVT150HX
The AVT150HX has two loudspeaker outputs.
The one marked ‘Extension 8 ohm’ is for
connection to a single 8 Ohm cabinet. The
output marked ‘Extension 8/4 ohm’ can either be
used for connection to a second 8 Ohm speaker
cabinet, or to drive a single 4 Ohm cabinet.
WARNING:
Always provide the AVT with a load equal to, or
greater than, 4 Ohms.
Note: Two 8 ohm cabinets connected in
parallel = 4 ohm"

You're currently giving the amp 8//4 = 2.6 ohms which is not enough. Sorry!

This is what you should wire the cabs as to give 5.3 which is > the 4 ohm minimum.

the 4ohms are in series the 8ohms are in paral0l.
