Duo-Sonic II Project

I bought a body off of dodgedartdave a couple of months ago. It was a duo-sonic routed at the neck for a humbucker, i'm sure he remembers. Anyway, I'm just about ready to start putting the paint on and this is the scariest part. I'm mostly curious about a good way of suspending the guitar to spray. But, I'd love any of your most pertinent tips. I"ll go ahead and give you the lowdown on it all, though:

Duo Sonic II
olympic white/Red tortoise pickguard
Fender MIM Tele neck pickup
unknown strat style pickup[i think it's a middle position but i'm putting it in the bridge position; i'm excited about this wild card]
musicmaster bridge
lefty neck[reverse]

--This brings up another issue. I'm keeping my eye out for a nice original shortscale neck. However, for the sake of gigging this summer, I kind of want to get a neck quickly and under a budget. Sooooo, i'm probably going to go with a licensed mighty mite or something like that. I don't know what to think of this choice. What is your experience? It's mostly provisional, mostly cost-efficient, and it could have a permanent place, but I'd like to get some feedback.

Welcome aboard! Nice to see this thing under way! Nice stip job. You've done a good job of getting rid of all that latex house paint and yellow furnature varnish.

Don't give up on finding a vintage neck. An early neck 60's neck just sold this week for 60 bucks plus shipping. 2 weeks ago, I just bought a 70's bronco neck for 140 bucks. The real warn 67 mustang neck that you saw at my house I picked up for 160 bucks. Deals do exist. I think that a vintage neck is worth waiting for. If I see anything, I'll PM ya.

What are you looking for in a neck? 22.5? or 24 inch? Also what nut width?

Hi dave, good to hear from you. I'm looking for a B width neck with a nut width around the same as a strat, 1 5/8". Furthermore, I'm kind of sold on a lefty neck as a simple way of personalizing. I found a lefty jazzmaster neck that slipped through the cracks, alas. I'll keep looking. I don't know the cons of the licensed necks, though i'm sure there's a laundry list. But the pros fit my efficiency and price range criteria

well, both the Jazzmaster and strat necks are at 25.5" and you've mentioned that you want a shortscale.

In all the things to be known concerning guitars, necks would probably be my weakest area. I know what I've been comfortable with, but I don't have any correspondence of numbers to experience. I know that an A width is too thin, and I know that I'm very comfortable playing a Stratocaster. I also prefer the shortscale neck. I don't know whether the nut width is directly proportional to the scale of the neck or not. But I wouldn't mind putting a 25.5" neck on it either. It just might look funny
These would be good things for me to know.

Have you ever looked into Warmoth? They are really good and they start at 157 bucks. You have your choice of maple or rosewood and you can do a lefty headstock with 24 inch scale.

Oh ya, for 157 they are unfinished. There are plenty of folks here to point you in a direction with finishing if you need help with that.

A 25.5 would not intonate properly so that the 12th fret is the same octave note. You may be able to move the bridge or something, but you would be better off finding a 22.5 or 24. 24s are not noticeably different from 25.5 IMO. That's three fingers. Be diligent about looking. Warmoths are fine but can cost more. Better to get a vintage piece that nobody gives a shit about. You don't want to know some of the deals I have gotten. You don't.

Alright, so now that we've settled the neck issue, I still need tips on the painting issue. I've read and reread and rereread ReRanch's 101, but I'd like to have some tried and true pointers.
I'm indebted to this place now.

That was a great deal with the white tiped F tuners. The tuners alone often sell for 110.
