I could do every permutation but I'm thinking there isn't going to be that much of a change to sound in the PI. Certainly when I was pissing about with valves a few weeks ago putting the JJ into the PI didn't affect the tone at the levels i was playing.

Well then just do 1-4 of mine, still more representative than your list.

£35 is a great price for the Little Big Muff - very tempting.

However, if they dont give me a postage price then hhmm, i dont trust them.

They're a large reputed retailer (the biggest valve supplier in the UK) so you can trust them, I just think they're shysters on the P&P.

by dont trust, i mean i dont trust them not to slap £15 on the price after ive pruchased.

blimey, they're doing the micro metal muff for £32. that is crazy-cheap. again, temptation...though i dont actually play metal..

Gotta remember prices are without VAT as well.

Fair enough. I forgot I had put the JJ in the V2 for the Harmas. I'm going to have a play about and see what is the most dramatic differences.

Turns out the stock Laney TAD valves in my VC30 are actually quite well respected. This is going to be quite a mammoth session. I'll do ever combination I can over the weekend before the other arrive and include changing the power valves too. This should be a pretty cool experiment.

Just did a quick back to back with standard and the cryo valve in V1.

There is more bass, the amps a bit more aggressive and more gain too. But there is still a great balance in chords at the high reachs of the gain. The non cryo one is going to be interesting.

Put the non cryo version and it certainly sounds different from the deep freeze valve.

Will happen tomorrow when I have the time to do it. It's a bit late to do anything but reallllllllly quiet samples which might be a bit useless.

Plan is to do the same chordy riff at clean, break up and rocking settings cos I'm boring like that. I'm making up my list at the moment and I'm checking it twice. I've got two brands of powertubes and five brands/types of tube to try out.

1xJJ ECC83STR
1xHarma ECC83DR250
1xHarma ECC83DR250 Cryo
2x Orange nonames 12AX7s
2x TAD 12AX7s Selected Premiums
4x TAD EL84STR Selected Premiums
2x Orange nonames EL84s

Lots of combonations I could try.

A single riff is the only way to make representative samples of a comparison - see my Crate Powerblock + pedals sample.

Cool. I'd love to hear samples. I'm still a little skeptical of the cryo thing.

There's just so much fad hifi bullshit that perennially goes around that I need to hear for myself before I can believe the hype. (Vibration damping rings for Cd's anybody?)

Perhaps a blind taste test is called for so perceptions can't be biased by possible expectations. With perhaps a control sample or two that repeats a tube combination to see who's perceptive enough to pick it out.

So I'm looking at my TT and I'm thinking to myself, do I actually know which position is V1 and which is V2. I've been thinking the left hand valve is V1 and I just realised this morning as I've started to do recordings that that makes no sense cause the input or on the right hand side so surely the right valve is V1.

Hmmmm?

How would you like the samples doods? All the cleans together then all the dirty stuff? Or Clean and dirt for each combination?
