I have a dilemma. I haven't been playing guitar for that long and the amp I have is pretty poor (Marshall G15R CD) I don't think it is doing my guitars any favours. I don't know anything about amps but I would like to get something half-decent and I don't know if there's any point in me going to a shop to test some out if I don't have the geetar skillzez to test the sound properly.
so...can you help me to choose a new amp, give me info, prices etc... I find that the amp I have now is very bassy, although that could be because it's just a wank amp or because I don't know what I'm doing.
Well there are many things to consider...Do you have a band and gig constantly? Or do you want a practice amp? What kind of music you play? or how much you are willing to spend...
i'd say go for one of the new low-wattage tube amps everyone's bringing out... way better tone than i ever got starting out for about the same money i spent on my earliest amps.

Okay. I don't have a band or gig constantly, I play music in the style of The Smiths, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead...general rock/ pop shenanigans until I improve some. I don't know what multiple channels mean and I can probably pay up to £350-£400 (approx. $700) if necessary.
my current amp is only a 15 watt and only cost £65 so I'm looking for something a little better than that.
do you have any links to the kind of thing (low-wattage tube amp?) you're talking about?

That's an odd complaint from a small combo amp.. do you mean it's actually bassy or is it just missing top end, so it seems muddy or wooly in comparison?
Have you messed around with the EQ (bass, treble, middle) much?
I've listened to the suggested amps on yoochube, I'm totally in love with the sound of the Laney LC30-II

EDIT: Doog, even if the bass is turned all the way down it's still to bassy but I thought that was a characteristic of a Marshall amp. The higher notes don't have much presence at all...I don't really mind, I've had it a while and it was cheap to start with.

If anything, Marshall are known for their biting midrange, not low end. What do you have the amp resting on? It's possible that whatever it is is amplifying the low end a bit. Or maybe you just like quite thin guitar sounds?
...about $700 you say? i think you can still find great deals on silverface fenders from the 70s in that range. a good ol' bassman head and cab... or a twin... and you're ready to rule the world!
