Advice on a suitable guitar amp

Post by othomas2 »

Hello shortscale fans.. long time no see.

I wondered if someone could give me some advice... on a suitable modern day amp that would be a good all rounder.

I've started playing gigs but as I live in London and have to rely on public transport a fare bit then I need something that isn't as big as my 70's marshall 100 watt lead combo... But could still cut the mustard in a gigging situation.

I have considered a peavey bandit 112 but not sure how this would fair with other (tube?) amps.

Any general advice would be appreciated....

thanks
Owen

what is the budget.

If you are looking on the cheap maybe a peavey classic 30 or classic 20.

If you don't care as much about the $ maybe a smaller orange combo, or the like.

If you really dig the marshall, then get a smaller Marshall tube combo

How many watts and what tones do you want out of it.
They say great minds think alike....Sometimes we do too...

peavy classic 30 might be up your alley. plenty loud, almost fender-like clean, better over drive than alot of
newer fenders.

either the peavey classic 30 or a peavey valveking 112 combo. both are pretty much the same control wise. theyre pretty cheap (at least in america) too.

yes!

classic 30's are just flat out great amps.
I gigged one for about a year until i lost it. i luved it.

for 400-600 dollars, there are a ton of good amps, but always try to buy used and save some CAHS

Thanks for the advice... I keep hearing the classic 30 being mentioned, so perhaps that will be the one to go for... :)

it's 30 watt tube, if you're playing a venue where that's not loud enough, they should be micing the amp anyway

Good call. a lot of people do that to their Classic30's.

And take off the ugly Peavey logo.

I dunno I'm afraid. Would be good if they did though. I like the older cosmetics better though.

Cheers for the advice chaps... much appreciated.

I had a quick peak at the classic 30 and the valveking 212 at my work place today. Yet to try them out though. Too busy working !!!

Not sure why the valveking works out cheaper as it seems to offer more on most aspects ??? the discount margin was better too though.

I think I could get the classic 30 for £371 and the valveking 221 at around £350. hmmm.... not too bothered about the cash as it's a worthy investment. I guess I just need to try the 2 out, & decide for myself, but wondered if anyone would care to comment on this comparison.

Also, mike.... on a side note.. I just googled the baja tele... and found you on you tube testing it . That's you isn't it ? We just got one in just like yours... looks really nice. There some slight gaps (pickup holes) at the side of the bridge which put me of slightly and I'm not sure I could live with the fat neck :( Might just stick with my jap fenix tele...

btw. I don't work on the shop floor so hence my lack of imediate knowledge etc. Only recently have I really got back into the music side of things... due to other commitments... I was on jagstang.com a lot before veering away from the whole thing when there was the split. What happened to yun btw lol ??

anyways... I'll shut up now...

thanks again.
Owen
