Toaster PUP options...

Post by Will »

My Fauxkinbacker has 3 reasonably good-looking toaster PUPs. They sound great, but not all that much like the real thing since they use an alnico bar instead of polepieces.

Here are the options:
Track down 2 real toasters (no middle) at around $100 each if they can even be found (damn Ric)

OR - It looks like a bare Tele neck PUP would fit under the covers if I cut the sides of the bobbin off. Plus, a tele PUP has the same polepieces, wire gauge, and resistance as a 50s toaster. 3 $23 specials from GFS could do the whole guitar.

I've done this once before - wedging a tele bridge PUP into a chrome HB case with great results.

Opinions? Or should I just leave well enough alone?

maybe go for the 'real deal' rics toasters if you think the guitar itself is a keeper... but i dunno, it's a lot of money for pickups, plus they're hard to get hold of, would gretsch pickups fit ? :)

i'd go for the cheaper option and get the tele pups, if you've tried it and liked the results than it's a safe (and affordable) move, ric stuff is overpriced anyway, it's ridiculous
