How Many?
Inspired by the guitar thread.
The true test of gear whoredom, have you ammassed enough amps that you might have what could be considered a collection?
Cabinets do not count as amps (obviously).
I have:
Fender Frontman 25R
Marshall AVT150H with AVT412 cabinet
Fender Champion 600
Epiphone Valve Junior Head (with blown transformer )
I want:
Tiny Terror
Peavey Delta Blues

How did you manage that?BacchusPaul wrote:Epiphone Valve Junior Head (with blown transformer )
I was stuck at my parents house for a while, so I made a cab out of the Fender Frontman by cutting the speaker cable, and putting a jack on the end.
It worked well, and provided me with a nice, bright tone that was different from the one I'd get with the Marshall cabinet. This was accented by the lively acoustics of my parents large tiled kitchen and dining room. Very enjoyable.
A few days later, after someone had moved the amp to one side, I went to plug in again. I checked everyting was plugged in, turned on, strummed a chord and sat waiting for the valves to come to life. This did not happen. After a generous amount of time waiting for the valves to warm up/transformer to cook, I switched off. I tried it with the Marshall cab, and it still doesn't work.
I'm not sure what to do with it. It's hardly worth the price of a new transformer, like, is it?
If I win the lottery or something, I'll replace it with a Mercury Magnetics Transformer.
Actually, now that I think about it, that sort of rules out the Fender Frontman too I suppose. That takes me back down to a more reasonable two amps.

I have checked nothing, and have no multimeter.Mike wrote:Are the Valves lighting up? Have you checked fuses?
Are you sure the cable is shorted/open circuit? Get your multimeter out.
In future the general rule is that if it doesn't make sound after a couple of seconds turn off and check everything twice.
The power light is lighting up. I'll check valves when I get home.

That means one fuse is OK, try checking the HT fuse inside if the tubes don't light up. Also worth checking the tubes themselves.BacchusPaul wrote:I have checked nothing, and have no multimeter.Mike wrote:Are the Valves lighting up? Have you checked fuses?

Does this mean that it might not be the transformer?
Because at the time I kind of thought: "ah well, fuck that!" and gave up, like.

Not much. If you going to do ANYTHING with amps (like making a speaker lead as you did) you need one to check your work.

just two:
- fender hot rod deville 2x12 (currently being used as a speaker cab)
- fender bandmaster (blackface)
want:
- a proper speaker cab and then sell the deville
- brownface princeton
- higher wattage amp with overdrive, maybe a modded showman or a bassman 300 or possibly even orange or marshall.
