differences in the 3 big muffs?

Post by dawnofzion »

I have a Russian bug muff but I am interested in getting a US one or little big muff. Is there a big difference in sound between the Russian, US made, and the new little big muff?

The US muffs are much more loud and fuzzy no muted chords here, the russians are transparent and bassy (green sovtek ones). The black russian ones are a little much on the high end side, hurts me hears in ways I don't like. The little muffs ok but I like a tone knob and such, I can't say much about these.

i prefer the russian one for its thicker, bassier sound. try 'em all, see which you prefer.

I like the LBM the best. But I would probably trade it for a black russian one, cause I want to mod one.

From my experience:

NYC Big Muff Pi - fuzziest of the most
Green Sovtek Big Muff Pi - more "distortiony" than the NYC, but sounds ggggreat
Little Big Muff - supposed to be somewhere between the NYC and Green versions.
Black Sovtek Big Muff Pi - a bit more nasty and dry sounding, although I've only recorded a band who use one a few times, haven't played with it myself.

Yeah NickD's green one sounded brilliant at Doogfest.

The LBM reissue has got a tone knob (the original LBMs didn't), and it's a little beauty - I quite regret selling mine. Played mine back to back with a normal "big" Big Muff, and although there wasn't much in it, I'd say the LBM had a little more fuzz on tap, and there was a little more action either end of the tone pot - like the standard muff went from 2-9 and the LBM went from 1-10 (if that makes any sense?).

GREEN SOVTEKS ARE BOMB!
black russians are different.. ok.

Out of the USA Versions..
the vintage original 70's muff's were amazing, but noisy.
need to use with a gate.

people consider the 2nd version (i.e. Ram's head version)
to be the best of all of em. but there is no right/wrong here.

mostly, there is no consistency from muff's made from any
given period, so a matter of luck is involved somewhat.
