15w amps

Post by riotshield »

I am looking to get a small amp for home/studio use and gigs in not big places.
I am across some good reviews of some cheap options such as Harley benton ga15 for 114£/159€
Image
which is 15watts with 1x10"
and Blackheart handsome devil for 236£/318€
Image
which is 15watts with 1x12".

For matters of price, size/weight and looks i'm closer to choosing the ga15, and from what i hear blackheart distorts easier at higher volumes something that i dont want but how much difference d'you reckon the bigger speaker of blackheart will make, the bigger size the more bottom end, right?

Also, would I be able to connect the ga15 at two cabinets at the same time? meaning its own cabinet and an extra one possible 1x12"
take a look at the back of it

ps. market of low wattage amps is really getting hot, for our good i guess, since competition is dropping prices.

Looks like the GA15 just has three taps and jacks, for 4, 8 and 16 ohms, Internal speaker is 8 ohms. You could use another but you would have to make a box to split the signal into two jacks in parallel or in series to give you the required funcation.

For example you could plug into the 16 ohm output and then two 8 ohm cabs (including internal speaker) in series or the 4 ohm output and two 8 ohm cabs in parallel. Bear in mind any box should use speaker cable for the interconnect and not guitar cable (signal line and shield). You shouldn't use two outputs on the GA15 itself as those are taps off the transformer itself at various windings, it would be bad, and probably kill the OT.

mhm, thanks for the info.
so, this means that in whatever 2 cabs u use they have to be of the same ohmage? is there a way to connect to 4 or 16ohm cabs at the same time with internal speaker?

Well you're going to incur a mismatch there which will stress the OT somewhat, if the mismatch is small it should be ok though.

For the two you described:

8 ohm int. // 16 ohm ext = 5.33 ohms -> use the 4 ohm output and a parallel box

8 ohm int + 4 ohm ext = 12 ohms -> use the 16 ohm output and a series box.

Nope. The preamp is solid-state, which means all the overdrive is solid state. It's sucks.

The Champ has a tube power amp and phase inverter, the Vibro just a tube power amp because it's single-ended.

I mean who needs all those fu*king effects if they can get pedals, the amp must provide a nice warm sound, by tubes..
maybe some reverb..
It would be awesome a amp like 15w(or 5w.. no biggy), all tube (preamp and amp), reverb lil bit (haha), gain/volume switch.. maybe treble/bass..
I would buy that for 100%.. totally.
