Ugly broads don't get no love from Mike.
you're a moron. have you ever PLAYED the american deluxe? or do you just write it off because it says "american" in it. i've been playing bass probably longer than you've playing guitar...maybe twice as long. and i've played every major iteration of basses. from squire Ps to gibsons to dan-os. NOTHING feels as good as my american deluxe. which has a maple neck, btw. and the "silly" active electronics=more tonal options than you shake a stick at.
you cannot ever fuck with my amdel jazz bass. ask dots. he's played it. and seen every bass i've ever played...and heard it, more importantly.
i know, it's more HIP to like the cheaper, less quality instruments on this board...but fuck that noise. go and play one mikey. you'll FEEL and HEAR the difference.
and for the record, i own both of those basses, almost exactly. except my amdel has a maple neck. and it beats the shit out of my MIM one, which is just fine.
but it's like saying that a VW Bug is better than a porche because it's "basically the same thing" without all the silly horsepower and handling capabilities.
I dunno why you're so bothered I don't like American Deluxe Jazz Basses.... I just don't. Surely personal preference is what makes the world go round. That and the fact I will never spend over £600 on a guitar, ever.

i think i'm more bothered that you've never played it and yet you're talking shit on it. isn't it pretty similar to your fussiness with bubbles? and i like i said, i literally own BOTH of those exact basses (except maple on my american) and i know the american deluxe is superior in every single way.
come on out here, and we'll jam and you can feel and hear the difference yourself.

just like bubbles has played baja teles, right? anyway, i'm over the argument because i for the life of me can't see how anyone who has played both would prefer the cheaper made bass...except to be "indie and hip."
Nope. I just like simplicity and non-active electronics in Bass guitars. Also I find the Aesthetics a lot more pleasing (the four knobs rather than 3 and the jack bother me in particular) and finally the price reasonable and something I would be willing to play for an instrument that will be used.
Having also played Squier Jazz Basses I actually reneged on buying the MIM Standard to buy a Squier Jazz Bass when I bought one, the one you now see J in Sell Crazy playing, after I gave it to him. Basically I spent 4 hours playing every Fender bass guitar in the music shop near my folks house many years ago when there was a large snowfall and the guy in the shop was bored of his arse. I was the only customer to go in all day so he let me play everything.
I did the same thing with Telecasters before I bought my Baja Telecaster. I played them at all the possible price points.

different strokes i guess. to me squier basses play like utter shit.

leave me out of this jimmy. i can speak for myself.
and mike, you shouldn't be so quick to write off active electronics on a bass. i have never met a bassist who looked down on them the way most guitarists do.
meh. They do nothing for me - that's what the amp is for. Any half decent bass amp will have a really great responsive graphic equalizer on it and normally a compressor at the front end.
The altered shape of the top bout and the top and bottom of the butt of the Deluxe Jazz bass really bother me aswell, it's like they tried to make it sexy or futuristic or something, I much, much prefer the more bulky substantial and flowing classic lines of a standard Jazz bass.

having owned two guitars in the american deluxe series, i can tell you they're worth it to me. but then again, i don't mind paying a few bucks more for the better instrument, and yeah, i think on the whole that vintage and deluxe series are better instruments. you can probably make an argument that the american standard series isn't as great, i couldn't care less as i've never bought one. hating on things simply because they cost more is pretty elitist. . . kinda like that effects thread where the indie kids were hassling that dude for using different equipment. wtf does it matter? if you can't tell the difference, that's your problem. i definitely could feel/hear the differences between the other strats and the american deluxe i ended up buying years ago.
active electronics are indeed different when it comes to bass sounds, as is the comparison between tube and solidstate amps. the tonal differences between bass and guitar are probably the reason for that.
i would like to state that a good setup will sway anyones decision.
if you blindfolded someone and gave them a squire jazzbass that was setup perfectly
and then you let them play the moste espensive new fender jazzbass(w/out active electronics) but it was setup like a cows asshole
then i think anyone would automatically go for the squire, but thats not to say with a good setup they would automatically select the fender either,
i just think that it sways opinions fairly easily.
i have a 62 strat, and i like it quite a bit. much better than your standard strats. Then again i have a 62 copy fernandes tele MIJ from the 80's.... and it sounds and plays better than all the fender teles i've picked up. and cost only like $400. take that as you will.

onto the rosewood thing being a plus.
does anyone know why fender started doing rosewood?
i had heard that leo started putting roswood on stuff becuz it used less lacquer, it was cheaper, and it didn't wear out and get "dirty" like maple did.
and also gibson used rosewood and then ebonized it to make inlay work easier,( i believe it was common practice in the 90's but im not 100% sure of it.)
the story goes leo fender saw someone playing on tv (i forget who) and saw how worn the fingerboard looked and was horrified. i think it was more of an image thing than any sort of cost-cutting. in fact, i'm sure that with the grade of rosewood they were using and the extra process involved, it was probably more expensive than just sticking with maple.
and as for the whole rosewood vs. maple thing, i like 'em both on different guitars. hating on someone for their personal preference is lame.
indeed, nowadays authentic braz rosewood is crazy high priced, but back then it was fairly abundant, and even still rosewood exists on every continent(besides the obvious)
it just goes under a different name depending on where it is from.
cocabola for instance is essentially a dirty or impure rosewood, but people like it cuz it can look alot like normal rosewood but can also have very extreme colors and grain patterns(i have a really cool fingerboard that i bought for a dollar in st. lious)
when was rosewood introduced?
does anyone know?
i would imagine that it was first introduced on the strat in the later 50's but i have no idea.
jazzmaster, 1958. all others, 1959.
brazilian rosewood is expensive now because it's all old stock. you can't cut down the trees anymore.
even though it was easier to get back in the day, it was still considered to be a crucial tonewood and was more expensive than your run-of-the-mill rosewood.
