listen to the first song.

I'm new with recording and mixing. Only been doing it for about a year.

I think I got pretty close.

Catchy catchy song. The one problem with trying to assess the mix right now is that I only have my headphones right now, so that throws off the low-end for me. Plus, it's an MP3 on Myspace, so I can hear the dithering in the cymbals. But, overall, I think that it's a solid mix. The distorted guitars might be slightly too loud for my liking, and I might pull the overheads on the drums a little bit more to the center, as opposed to having them hard-panned like it sounds like you've done. Then again, that's just me... I don't like hard panning them, personally. Beyond that, I'd give this mix some thumbs up, Ian.

Uhhhh, what? More like 4 years, yo.

My take:

The guitar sounds a little abrasive for the context I'd say, and the vocals could come up a bit. Probably knock the guitars down a bit like Jesse said, but it might just be the scrappy sound that's making them jump out too much. Basically, guitars down (maybe boost for the soloy bits) everything else up a bit.

Overall the mix sounds a bit harsh, a lot going on in the mids, sorta 6k or so.

I'd personally turn the 'verb on the piano down a bit, it just sounds kinda cheesey and 80s.. and maybe tame the highs slightly to make it sound more natural.

I agree with Doog about the upper mids. They really dominate the song in a bad way. I think the vocal is in the right place in the mix for that song. Is there bass in it at all?

I think it sounds great, but myspace can make a good mix sound bad, so from now on, if I were you, I'd just use the uploader here or summit so you dont get the shitty myspace suck machine ruining your mix. The piano is fine, its just electric, so it sounds like a keyboard and not a piano, but it works for the song, it matches the guitar's tone, they both give me that "journey" or "reo speedwagon" guitar sound. Sounds like a winner to me. Good Job.

I'm not counting the years before I got my pro tools setup when all I had was cool edit pro and an MR-8.

;)

I think the album I was referencing my mix off of might be a little bit harsh, i'm gonna try again using a different band as reference. And my bass guitar didn't want to stick out in the right way at all. :(

I read an article about the recording of the double disc Cd by Foo Fighters and how the bass was eq'd at a different eq for each song, that there was no rule to the frequency, it was just finding one so it would fit the mix, they mixed it last.

Tones and dynamics sound very good.

Turn do the guitars a little, they're quite over baring. What's your EQ like on em?
I dig the bg vox
I dig the piano, very classic sounding.
Panning is cool. What's your panning like on the drums? I can barely tell any.

I don't like critiquing myspace or MP3 mixes, but this is not bad. Jus now that an MP3 kills a lotta sound(debatable) but myspace then converts it again to take away even more.

Yeah, upload a 192+ kbps mp3, should be a better representation, especially if it's a very sparkly mix, I think myspace squashes mp3s to 112 or maybe even below.

I thought myspace was like 92k or something. It is really hard to tell what it actually sounds like, but I listened to all the songs and they're pretty good.
